With a -08 Disco, do I have to update the D3 module.... No
What is then the difference with an updated D3 and a new D4 module.... Iv already told you the differences ..
Is the D3 module in the boot a straight replacement with a D4 module? ... No .. The connector and mounting are different
Could you supply the cable that updates the D4 screen or do you have a part number? No .. There is no part number .. It's something that is made up

Using another thread on D3 to D4 bluetooth modules.
Not been for a spin yet to test the positioning speed etc, but it has located where it is, so looks to be ok.
Map software is
Not sure how upto date that is??
Only one question / issue to resolve I think, it doesn't dim with lights on at night, any pointers what to connect in to get this working would be appreciated
Contact me tommrow night round 18:00pm UK time on Skype..
@Beanie
There is a wire in the old D3 plug that dimms the old D3 screen, not had time to check it out but its on my to do list when i get chance. Not sure if it will work but you never know.
Cheers Mick, looking at the wiring diagrams, its pin 12 in the D3 plug, a red / brown wire that comes from the Lighting control switch
On the D4 diagram, there is only a "Illum" terminal indicated at pin 1, however no wire is shown on the schematic ?
So I think we need to identify the wire at pin 1, is it there, and what voltage is it at daylight and night, to compare this with the voltage from the D3 lighting control switch at pin 12.
On the D4 it shows nothing connected to this pin.? I am sure the D4 gets it's dimming info from another source, I will have to see if and when I get time to have a look at it..

The D4 has an ILLUM function which appears in various areas (including the connector we've been looking at)
I can see in the CJB, there is a FET - Ambient Lighting which has an output of ILLUM which is the same colour (Red/Brown) as the D3 lighting sensor. Indicates (possibly) that it's the same function. but we still need to see the D4 connector for the back of the touch screen (please)
Would a FET provide the oscillating signal that is alluded to from the PWM?

The illum circuit shown via the fets will be all the ancillary lighting including buttons. I would have thought that would have nothing to do with the dimming circuit that controls screen brightness. That signal probably comes from an ambient light sensor.

When you use the brightness rotary switch, it will dim all the lighting internally down ie the instrument pack. Wonder if it would at least allow some adjustment for screen brightness?Bodsys Brake Bible

I am not sure that is would do anything for the screen brightness. There are various light sensors on the D4 covering straight ahead, vertically up, to the rear and left and right to cater for all the different systems. I think there is also one in the centre control panel under the home menu button that may be for the screen brightness.
