Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine
Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.
Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud ‘rumbling/knocking’ sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.

Enough evidence for a legal claim I would think.
I don't think they would pay up without you getting legal help though. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Good news for some; but I am still stuffed as my engine 'failure' occurred so far out of warranty.
Doesn't every D3 TDV6 owner have a spare $21 410 to replace an engine and install new ancillaries (water pump, turbo, etc.) to ensure a full 12 month warranty? <g>LeighW
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Same comment as " Robbie "
Plus : " Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray. " :
This is a very important statement because they are so incompetent that they could plug in the computer to find the " DTC " and then do a " hard reset " to get it running again
Wonder what's the " enhanced customer handling procedure "

'enhanced customer handling procedure'
Thats where they sit you down and give you a nice cappuccino instead of the usual instant stuff when you go in to a dealers winging about how your £50k Disco with 50k miles on it has blown it's engine and what are they going to do about it It softens the blow apparently when they tell you to naff off.Discovery 4 HSE

Hi All
we have a fix for this here in South Africa. It is called Poly-TFE, a product developed in RSA for the defence and mining industries.
The leading indies are treating their cuzzies TDV6 D3's which then prevents the dreaded bearing failure.
The problem seems to be more prevalent on vehicles which are sparsely driven. But as I mentioned higher up, you can prevent it with that treatment.
BABEN who is very active on the Disco3.co.uk forum can vouch for this. EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

I'm not convinced that any snake-oil can relocate shells that were incorrectly installed at manufacture. Indeed I question the original design as they rely more on good fortune than mechanical action to remain in the correct place.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hi Robbie
the leading indies in SA use it to prevent the turning of the bearings. You are quite correct in stating that a dislodged bearing cannot miraculously be returned to its original position.
All that Poly-TFE does is to prevent cold start wear and tear, because that is when those shells are shifted.
And that is why this "wonder muti" works. As simple as that. There is no Voodoo involved.
The turning of the bearing shells can only happen, once the bearings have worn beyond a certain crititcal point.EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

Hi gseum
no it goes from early 2005 until end of line. To add insult to insury is the fact, that there are no parts available at reasonable cost to rebuild those engines.
Also engine rebuild data (torque values, clearances etc) are not available from LR.
There are currently a couple of hundred PSA engines in SA waiting for parts etc to become available. That excludes those replaced under warranty or extended warranty.EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

Torques from the engine manufacturer for the brave and lucky people who have access to parts.
Are there any here?

Re: Crankshaft notice
So what does this mean to owners or cars with 106,000 on the clock?, does LR now if servicing evidence is present inline with OEM guidance have to take a failure of an engine as warranty due to the design weakness now being confirmed an issue?
Looking for an official LR response to this one please. (as is everyone else!)FFRR SC 4.2
