I have never had any problems with the standard D3 brakes stopping the car.

I regularly go skiing in the Sierra Nevada with 5 or 6 adults in the car and ski gear to match, the road down in circa 23 km of steep down hill hair pins so in an auto you are braking all the time, i have never sufferred any brake fade.

I tow big 16ft trailers. The brakes are checked and adjusted often monthly. When the brakes are working properly they have little effect either way on the vehicle not pushing or pulling. We have noticed going from TD5 to D4 trailer brakes wear quicker as the better brakes on the car make them work harder also likely to get up to speed quicker and need brakes more often. The brakes on my D4 are mediocre unless pushed hard. They must be really poor on the D3. Or may be I need to change discs and pads more than I think.

I've got a v8 petrol d3 and I'd be horrified if the brakes were any worse.

Brembo upgrade will give some extra power, but importantly it will give better performance on subsequent stops. Fade will be much harder to achieve.
