On a slightly different track.. if the D3 std set up was OK why did LR put bigger discs & pads on the D4??

Ok it has a bigger engine and more HP but the weight of the thing is not considerably more.
 Cheers Ian

I understand the D4 is actually lighter than a D3 Thumbs Up

Because the D4 was a general improvement overall on the D3 Smile

The D4 is much more refined than the D3, there are those that will argue otherwise but the simple fact is it is considerably improved over the 3 !

At launch the 4 will have already been lined up for 8 speed transmission 3
Litre engine with improved torque and the higher output of the SDV6 so upping the stopping power would have been a necessary requirement and with the term night & day being used a lot this is the difference between the two vehicles, altho it shares the same chassis and body and has the same running gear the power output and the way the power is delivered is astonishing !

A re mapped D3 is not the same as a D4 either.

The difference in braking over my 3 with V8 conversion to a D4 which I drive on a daily basis is again night and day, the 4 has what appears to be subtle differences but it is a step up in build, quality, power, refinement.

The standard TDV6 setup is barely adequate, IMHO.

I had a few "moments" when slowing from reasonable speeds, the car just felt like it was not going to slow down.

Much worse when you are towing a caravan Mike, that's why I got mine changed to the V8 brakes Thumbs Up

Am I right in thinking that if you install the V8 upgrade on a D3 diesel, you will have to inform your insurance company as it's a modification (they always ask at renewal time if there are any modifications to body, brakes, steering, engine). I.e failure to do will invalidate your insurance.
I suppose any increase in premium will be dependent on the individual insurance company.

Yes that is correct you should Always tell your Insurance Providor of all modifications to your vehicle.

There is one point nobody has mentioned - Wear rates.

I never thought about upgrading the brakes on my 2 previous D3's as I always felt that they stopped more than adequately, however I would be lucky to get 15 - 20k out of a set of front pads, and every other pad change, it would need discs.

I now drive a D4, in the same manner that I drove the D3's, and so far its on 24k on the pads and they are about 50% worn. ( I will subtract 2k from this because the car had a brake fault when new and had new pads and discs at 2k).

So, whilst not all will need or appreciate the greater braking force of upgraded brakes, you may go through less of them.

Reading this thread all I can say is too many people seem to be driving around with not enough anticipation (Reading and planning as they used to say in the PSV and HGV worlds) I could count on 1 hand the times I've had to use my brakes in anger in over 30 years of driving (all sorts of different vehicles) Whistle

The only time I put them through any stress is bedding in new pads on an empty industrial estate or similar. I find the original set up adequate if lacking a little feel, when my pads wear out I might upgrade to find out if that improves.

Just getting a feel for how much the premium goes up by seeing my car is my own and not on my fleet policy, before I consider doing the mod. Thumbs Up

I've told them about, side steps, re map, light guards, spot lights, RAI, brakes and other things that I've had done ?

Why would any one risk not getting paid out when a claim comes ?
