The idea is that you can slide in what ever tongue you like which will raise or lower the height of the ball or hitch. The height as set is high enough to have a minimum effect on the departure angle with the tongue removed a tongue which lowers the ball/hitch height will reduce the departure angle.
Remember the off road height of the hitch should not be too high for the trailer.
We have about 50mm to play with in the receiver height.
What do others think is 570-580mm too high or about right for the max height? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Of course - because at anything over 50kph we're operating at "normal" suspension height - that's the key one that matters...
I'll try and get some measurments on the weekend from bumper to tyre etc with wheel carrier.
cheers,

caverD3,
The tow heights that you indicated are about right for me, I’m interested but I would suggest that you don’t go any lower even if you have scope available in the receiver height. Many thanks for your efforts and well done on the progress to date.
Cheers

Going to Mitchell bros tomorrow for a start to the prototype.
Simon can you measure for the bar you have: just put something flat accross the hole and let me know if there is a gap and how much between the surface of the bar and the recovery eye. Also the distance between the eye and the fold in the bar.
Thanks “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

CaverD3 - can you clarify? I have a standard bumper bar - it's the wheel carrier that I'm concerned about if the hitch is too high, will it allow for my Tregg coupling etc etc?...
Your pics showed a receiver positioned out from where the recovery eye is - does this mean we'll be able to recover from the new hitch receiver? Also - are Mitchell Bros talking about rating it to 3.5t?
I've posted a rear-on shot of the car with wheel carrier at:
Cheers - and thanks for your efforts on this.

Sorry Simon, assumed you had a Kaymar Bar with your wheel carrier.
By the look of the photo it should be ok give me the height of the treg hitch in top and I will give you a position relative to the recovery eye but a tongue with slight drop would easily clear the tyre.
Yes the idea is you will be able to recover off the tongue receiver. If you can recover from it it sould be able to take the 3.5T load rating. It will be engineered accordingly but will take engineers advice as to modifying the prototype. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

PS if anyone has a Kaymar bar let me know especially if in Sydney so we can make sure it fits with one as well. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi Simon, CaverD3.
At risk of telling you how to 'suck eggs', snatching from the pin that sllides thru a standard Haymond Reese type coupling (the pin that holds the tongue into the square tubing), is a standard method taught by most of the 4WD instructors. That works for all vehicles with that type of hitch, so I'm assuming that will work for what's being proposed here. Naturally the tongue has to be removed before attaching a snatch strap this way - but then you wouldn't be trying to recover a vehicle when your trailer is attached anyway.
Keep up the good work guys.
Cheers,
Martin

The alterative is to put a solid tongue with a shackle attached. Mitchell Bros sell them for about $60.
Engineer has made suggestions to the design to cope better with shock loads.
Slow progress but it is heading there. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Martin - agreed, and hence my question too... except you wouldn't want to do a recovery that way with the OE LR D3 hitch receiver D3 - Buckingham Blue, SE, TDV6, 06 model; chipped; underbody armour; Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18 AND MAXXIS Bighorn muddies; rear wheel carrier from 4x4intelligence.com; iPOD aux connection! You have probably mentioned this before but how much
and what sort of design is it
The standard tow hitch scraped a lot on rocks and coming in and out of creek
beds but it didnt hook up or slow us down on our recent trip
It just looks rediculuous and the tongue needs another 1" of upward bend in
it to give the towball more height

Let's hope the response is positive!
I'm going to be O/S for 6 weeks from the weekend and won't be checking in on the site, so if the solution meets the criteria we've discussed before and they are looking for numbers of potential purchasers - you can count me in.
Cheers,
Martin
