They are mock ups. The engineers will need to draw up and evaluate. We need a few folk to get together and invest in the design and testing so we can get a certificate. With a few of us I am sure we can get it for way below the $650 HR want. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

caverD3 - if I get you some pics/measurements on the distance from recovery point to spare wheel on carrier, we'll need to take that into account...
would that help?

Thanks Simon,
It would be useful: we want to take everyone into account so it is suitable for all. That is the idea of the design. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Sounds good Simon. I too wondered about any interference with a rear wheel carrier. So long as that is satisfied, the approach looks good. Any other height issues will then able to be resolved by the height of the 'slide in' coupling. As stated, certification is essential.
Cheers.

Just spoke to mitchell bros. Engineer should be ok. each one will need serial no. He will do test to destuction before final production run. Looking positive.
I will do a line drawing of what it should look like.
We need to know how many want this hitch before he will put the money in depending on numbers and set up costs about the $3-500 could be the final cost. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Only other concern I have with having the hitch at the height proposed in the Mitchell Bros solution is - for me - every tongue/hitch will have to be multi-height type device to get to the required ball height, whereas I was hoping to be able to use standard hitches eg. from LR or HR for most of my toys (eg. boat, off-road trailer etc.
Must get home and check height etc on wheel carrier...
cheers,

It would be about the same height as the old D2 receiver.
You would either have to put a multi heigt pate on or you just have a different tongue with various drps to suit each trailer.
No matter what height the receiver is put at you will need to vary the ball/hitch height to suit your trailer.
The receiver is placed at that height as it would be the highest off road hitch height and would give the best exit angle. Other trailer heights could be ctaered for by a drop from the tongue.
What do various folk think is the maximum height for thr receiver? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi CaverD3. Not sure about the maximum height, but the height I need is a bit over 500mm to the flat on the tongue (where the Treg Hitch receiver bolts to). That provides for a level tow height for my off-road camper trailer.
Cheers.

caverD3,
I'm indeed interested in your design option, as it seems to meet my key needs of maximising departure angle, whilst retaining access to the spare underneath and ideally being certified.
For towing my offroad CT, I need the flat surface on the top of the tongue (on which my treg is bolted) to be around 520mm. To answer your question on heights, the maximum height for the receiver would presumably need to be roughly around this mark, assuming a tongue gets used something like that in your gallery i.e. one with a very slight rise from the square section that goes into the receiver.
One point of interest and possible concern to me with your design is just how far rearward from the bumper the tongue would end up being and whether this ends up biting into the departure angle. Any thoughts on this? For mine, having a HR style hitch receiver isn't high on my list of essentials, but being able connect a treg hitch is. I might be wrong but I'm not convinced that these should always have to go together.
Just on this I'm interested in whether, in the interested of max departure angle from a certifiable towbar, it could be possible to adapt caverD3's design with a BRS unit "style" vertical plate located close to the bumper and to which a horizontal piece resembling the end of a tongue (ie the bit to which the treg is bolted to) could be bolted (by way of a vertical section turned up from the horizontal "tongue" piece) to various heights using different bolt holes on the vertical plate. This would be instead of the hitch receiver, but would use the same intended design for attaching it to the vehicle. By the way, if you fully followed my meaning above, you're a genius!
If your indicative costs work out about right, this could be roughly in the same ballpark as bringing in the SA BRS unit, even when the significant freight costs were shared around as other members have done previously. But the certification with your option makes it more appealing for me for now, with the BRS one being my fallback given that it is as solid as and I'd like to avoid a receiver that sits under the bumper if at all possible.
Cheers

the point of the removeable HR type square tube is trailer heights vary and your idea of a fixed tongue would be trailer/vehicle specific.

I think what Take it Easy is suggesting is bolting the tongue receiver onto the plate so a fixed fat tow point with a treg hitch could be bolted in plce instead; this would inprove the departure angle over the tougue receiver plus the tougue witha treg hitch attached.
The difficulty with this is that the tongue will receiver will penetrate the plate in order to reduce the intrusion into the departure angle as much as possible. This will also add to the strength of the unit.
Also as CW pointed out the idea of a tongue receiver is to make the hitch as flexible as possible and as easy to change for different trailer heights as possible.
We will need to do a mock up and see what the exact effect on the departure angle would be, but I am sure it will be better than the HR below bumper one. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Provisional tow height for the hitch is approx:
Off road: 562mm
Normal: 517mm
Access: 462mm
This is from centre of the receiver to the ground.
How does this suit your trailer height?
We are looking for the max height for an off road treailer with a 'Treg Hitch'.

Hi CaverD3
So if the height measurement is (normal) 517mm to the centre of the hitch receiver, where would that place the flat of the tongue (on which the Tregg hitch is bolted)? I'm guessing it would be about another 50 - 60mm higher, does that sound about right? If so, that brings the Tregg hitch up to around 570-580mm, which I would have thought would be more than high enough for anyone. It no doubt all depends on the height of the slide-in tongue.
Cheers.

Just a reminder to all - the self-leveling suspension in the air-suspension D3 means what you see is what you get. 517mm height will be after the trailer is attached. Not so for the S models with coil springs, or other sprung vehicles we towed with in the past.
For the record - put me down in the interested list. (CaverD3 - I told you that at Penrith, but want to make sure!).
Cheers,
Rob
