Micthell Bros (they do mods for 4x4s) so have engineers they deal with.
We need to be able to fund the prototypes with some deposits or we get a few guys to put in a bit. If we sell extra it we could distribute the profits.
If we find enough funding we can make up the two prototypes for tsting. They would be just oxy cut and welded, the final product would be laser cut and spiffy. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Have a look at at my gallery, this is a simple solution to the tow bar problem, it can easley have the option of a HR type recever.
My tow bar has been exerlent off road , & on road loaded to the max. It sits in neatly, and reletavley easy to manufacture.
If you would like to use the design or concept contact me.

Thanks Rob
It's neat and simple solution but would need to be approved by an engineer to mass produce. For my needs yours would work.
Who did you get to make it?
But I was trying to produce something that would suit all needs and that can be removed easily if needed. Sort of what LR should have done in the first place. ie a tongue receiver just below the recovery eye.
I would rather use your one than the HR one, it maitains the exit angle.
If this doesn't come off I might just make one of yours. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

CaverD3 - the new HR unit should maintain the departure angle - the receiver would sit under the recovery eye...

Yes I get your point. Wile mine can not be removed, the toungue can, leaving very little visable.
I wil have to get it engereered some time. As I understand it there are two types of cert. A one off for my bar on my vechle and a major one if you intend to commercially produce it.

I made the bar, the design came about from looking at nearly every bar I saw and thinking they are basicly all the same with small vairyations. Not liking what I saw it was time to think out of the box. It needed to be simple very strong, unabtrucive, and functional. It is basically made of 12mm plate held on by 12 half inch high tencile bolts. The tungue is held on with two 3/4 inch high tencile bolts. An option would be a HR style receiver ,I opted for the fixed toungue as it doesent rattle. Orignally I intended the HR type and had it all made but changed my mind.

Well we seem to have few options being presented (which is always better than having none). I'm with CaverD3 and Simon that the solution must be able to be given certification - no matter how sound a 'home grown' solution is, the consequences of having anything go wrong could be horrendous if it's not approved.
Clearly a commercial organisation (maybe HR) arein the best position to invest development dollars in building a prototype for destruction testing, but if there is an engineering house (CaverD3) that is prepared to go part of the way with us, I'd be prepared to put some dollars into a pool to get an outcome. How much? maybe $200-$300? If, say 5 of us were prepared to do that and the engineering house was prepared to meet us part way on the basis that they receive the sales - then maybe. All much simpler though if a HR can come up with an appropriate solution on a commercial basis.
Cheers.

I'll 'photoshop' an idea of what we came up with PM me if you are interested. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks to all for the various updates and information on options. Six months ago I was despairing of there ever being a solution; now it seems there is at least one option about to come on the market and another in the wings
While I am interested in any good option, I am attracted to the HR option - they have the expertise and track record (no criticism intended of others). They also have a good warranty and insurance coverage for their products.
Regards

CaverD3 - has the fabrication co your'e talking to considered if the hitch will be able to be used as a recovery ie. snatch point given that it's using the rear recovery eye? I aleways used to recover from the tow hitch on the D2.
cheers,

check your PM
recovery points in the gussets or put a recovery tongue in with a D shackle. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

CaverD3, are the shots in your gallery 'real', or computer mock-ups? They look very nice and just what I'm looking for.
Cheers.

caverD3 - do Mitchell Bros think they can this hitch certified to 3.5 tonne?
I like this design - it does protrude from the rear of the vehicle, vs sitting just underneath the bumper, but the wheel carrier protrudes anyway.
My concern now is it too high? ie. will it allow the use of a wheel carrier there, esp with something like a tregg coupling, that needs space above the hitch to put the pin in etc?
Why is it so hard
