Hi Guys
I had a disco 1. after 12 years of exceptional service it has finally become uneconomical to repair.
It's also full of mice.
So I'm looking for a disco 3. My budget is about 9-10k, so bottom end of the range I guess
I'm looking at mileages though....at what point should I stay well away? what milage is too much?
Bear in mind i'm looking to get at least 5 years service from the thing in a reliable fashion. It won't be working hard for me, it'll do about 8000 miles a year and little/no offroading.
It will tow very occasionally.

Mine has done 92k and still like new, cam belt must be done and a good service history as with all cars. Seems some have more issues than others,

I think your question is totally relative to what the vehicle has been used for.....if a disco has been pulling heavy trailers off road or pulling boats in and out of the sea they are more likely to suffer the issues we all fear.....
However an ex Highways agency Disco which has hundreds of thousands of miles of non stressed motorway miles underneath it and has been continuously serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations would be a far better buy.....my own 8 month old D4 now has 22,000 miles on it but is totally mechanically perfect and would be a far better buy than a similarly aged version with a third of the mileage if used in a hostile environment....
Don't be frightened by mileage but concentrate on what that car has been used for and how has it been cared for......look for a big wadge of service bills would be far more important...
The only word of warning is if you are looking to move the car on after a couple of years....people will definately down value the car as a result of big miles....
Use this to your own advantage if looking for a high miler... You may get a bargain...

As the other respondees are saying, mileage is less important than condition (within reason). I spent a lot of time last year searching round the country for a good, low mileage D3 and eventually found one in East Anglia (I live in NW Scotland!).
45k miles later it now has had many of the issues that are common to the vehicles, and I am beginning to wonder if I would have been better to buy a well maintained vehicle which had had the relatively expensive 105k service done.
The other advantage of a higher mileage vehicle is that you won't feel so much of a need to use a main dealer (if at all) for servicing etc, but can instead go to the indies who are usually more knowledgeable. Unfortunately I was not aware of the forum before buying (so you are already one step ahead!), and only became a member after being fleeced by a main dealer for the second time in a year. I naively took out a 3-year 'LR Assured Warranty' which ties me in to main dealers, only to find that LR will have nothing to do with it when you have a difference of opinion as to what should be covered.
So, to answer your question (at last) I would probably go for a car that has just topped the 100K mark and has a FSH with the 105k service completed. As already stated, there are examples of such vehicles here on the forum, as well as on numerous forecourts around the country  Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

on a £9-10k D3, you are likely to be at the 06 plate at the latest, and probably 54, 05, 55. The big service should have been done, based on age- do check though. You should be in the cheaper tax bracket too. Alarm bells, for me, ring when you see an older vehicle and they say "cam belt just done", or even worse "due" and you realise that it was 12/18 months late. It doesnt fill me with confidence that the vehicle has been maintained "regardless of cost" as garages like to say.
Suspension parts seem to rear their head around the 100k mark, from what I have read. I think a smart buy is one that has had the various bits done.
A low mileage car may be easier to sell in a few years, particularly when you have had to shell out a lot of money to take it through the expensive time!
The other option may be to get a low miler, and a comprehensive warranty. You know things are likely to go wrong, but as long as wear and tear is covered, you are protected. A risky strategy, but...

Don't forget the V8s - the engines are less 'precious' than the oil burners and they can make sense depending on what you intend to use the vehicle for

That is precisely the route I took but am now regretting - even though the LR Assured Warranty (ie their top levbel one) apparently covers electrical faults, I was recently asked to commit to between £430 and £520 'up front' for them to diagnose the issue before they would even approach the warranty people  Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

you are in the lower end but that doesn't mean you can't get a good car.
As said, buy a higher mileage one. The bushes in the suspension go after 100k, so anything above that should have new front lower arms, and likely the ARB bushes done.
Make sure the belts have been done. If not, walk away.
There is a forum member with a Tonga green SE, manual with a new gearbox up for sale, £10,500 is the price. It's been maintained well and has the usual wear and tear items done to it. In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Looks very tidy and certainly 'in range' for the price. Only obs. is that the bonnet does not have the lettering on - has it been replaced, or was this not standard on an 05?

It has just had a list of suspension parts replaced. I'll publish the list later.
I think it covers the main bases.
its had its cambelt job done. Early.
It's been well looked after
full service history
it has the proper tow bar fitted
it's got SHINY MIRRORS!

Check the tyres are the correct size and load rating for the D3, as they are RRS wheels. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
