D3, 2 weeks in and the faults are coming....

To be fair the vehicle does have 3 months warranty from the dealer so it's not the end of the world yet.

My 2000MY TD5 was starting to turn into a money pit and I made the decision a couple of weeks ago that another TD5 was not the way to go so we went D3 shopping the weekend before last and came away with a very clean looking 2005MY 54 plate, TD6 SE in silver with 85K on the clock, FSH and a years ticket at a fair price (and they gave me £2k on the old TD5). We got it from a place in Welwyn Garden City (a couple of hours from where we live) called MMC Car Sales.

We drove it away there and then (after paying for it obviously Smile ). There were some warning lights on the way home which went away at the end of the journey but since then there have been a few more issues. Any way the long and short of is I sent them the email below and it is now booked in with them for the day on Wednesday:

"Morning,
I picked up my new vehicle from you a couple of weekends ago and there are one or two issues that I would like to make you aware of.

When driving the vehicle home from first buying it on 13/04/13 there were two or three amber warnings lit up on the dash (brakes, traction control and one other that I can’t recall). When we got home I restarted the car and the ambers did not return so I put this down to the vehicle not getting much use before we bought it (you said that the guy with the caravan had messed you about for a few weeks if I recall). A hook-up to a diagnostic machine probably wouldn’t hurt though.

However, there are some other issues that are of greater concern:
• The message system is saying that the engine coolant level is low. The level of coolant isn’t low and this message is intermittent and can go away and return more than once in the same journey. The vehicle is running at normal temperature.
• The PDC function is not working. The PDC switch on the consul flashes. When reverse gear is selected a short (2 seconds) tone is played but there is no further noise at all. If the flashing PDC switch is pressed the LED turns off but subsequent presses of the switch do not turn it back on again. The car is very clean still but I have gone over the sensors with a cloth to make sure they are not dirty but this has not had any effect. The vehicle has not been in any kind of collision and there is no damage to the bumper at all.
• The other thing that is happening is smoke and a strong burning smell coming from the front offside corner when the vehicle stops. This is intermittent and I cannot tell if it is coming from under the bonnet or from the wheel arch but the front disks are incredibly hot when I checked them (skin burning hot compared to the rear disks). I don’t know if that is just a coincidence or if it points to an issue with the brakes or callipers maybe? It isn’t the FBH as it is on the wrong side of the engine bay to be that and it is happening when the vehicle stops, not when it starts. Next time it happens (it’s happened 4 or 5 times in the 2 weeks we have had it) I will try and pin point the source of the smoke more accurately.

I don’t wish to appear nit-picky, I just thought the more detail I can give you will help you to diagnose the problems more effectively. Could you let me know how we can proceed? I am in Colchester so it would work better for me to let you have the vehicle back on a Saturday but I can work with you if that is not possible. If you would rather I gave you a call then let me know.

Kind regards,

Darren"

The guys at MMC seem decent enough so I'm hoping it will all get cleared up on Wednesday as it's a bit of a hike and a waste of a days holiday.

What I'm thinking now is that it might be a good idea to get her hooked up to some diagnostics independently for my own peace of mind. Can anybody recommend someone in my area?

Your issues are pretty common.
Coolant low - The float in the coolant tank gets porous and sinks... very common. Replace the expansion tank to fix.
PDC - Very common failure too. Usually a damaged wire or dirty sensor... Remove the rear bumper and check the wiring and clean things up
Hot brakes - Sticking caliper.

Needless to say all this should be fixed by the dealer you bought it from Thumbs Up

Yes - get a good Indy to give the car a through inspection.

Can't recommend anyone in your area though - no doubt someone you can will be along shortly.

All standard D3 fare and nothing that can't be fixed, plus not too pricey but the garage should be paying for it.

I can reccommend Essex4X4 @ Wickford to check what needs to be done, would make sense to have a specialist LR Indi to check it all out before it's too late. http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic42428.html?highlight=wickford

Where abouts in Essex are you? If you can make a hop over the bridge, Geoff on here is definitely a good guy. He'd be able to read the faulrs and list them for you. He can sort them for you too and is very fair. Obviously the garage need to sort the issues for you but a list of fault codes, if any, wouldn't hurt.

Please let us know how you get on?

I'm just outside Colchester which is as North Essex as it gets (if I fall out of the wrong side of the bed in the morning I would wake up in suffolk!). I just don't think I could find time between now and Wednesday to make that trip. If I can't find anyone suitable a little closer to home I will wait until after Wednesday and maybe arrange to hopefully see Geoff then.

I will also bear Essex 4x4 in mind, thank you.

I will of course keep you all posted and I very much appreciate all the advice that is generously offered by you all.

Ummm, little update - just noticed the service interval is saying next service is due in 30 miles. The service book is stamped by the dealer as done a couple of weeks ago.

Could the guys at MMC have forgotten to reset the counter or forgotten to do the service?

If it was services a few weeks ago you would have thought a lot of these issues you are experiencing would have been rectified. My guess would that it has not been serviced. Does the oil look cleanish ?

That was my thought Gary, but oil in diesel engines is so black within a few miles that I doubt, with respect, that this is a good indicator.

I think that DiskoStew must argue that these items would have been picked up in a service by someone competent, and that such a person would have reset the service indicator.

I would get the car inspected by an experienced Indy, as I suggested earlier. Do you have a decent warranty? If so with whom?

The more I hear the more unhappy I am...

I would say that it will have been serviced by there way of it, by changing the oil and the filter and maybe an air filter.

There was no way it was looked over with problems like that.

As much as there not big problems there annoying for the new owner.

Quite true Nigel, dont know how visible the oil filter may be, but its pretty easy access to see if the air filter has been changed, it should be changed at 45k and 90k. With yours being sold on 85k, you would expect a decent dealer to change it.

Thanks for your input guys. So in conclusion 'it doesn't look good but it may not be dreadful'. Rolling Eyes

The warranty is with MMC car sales who I purchased the vehicle from. I'm sure it's a warranty they in turn have purchased themselves but my contract is with them.

I think the issues I'm experiencing are based on the difference between a 'service' before sale where the dealer has to absorb the cost and a real service where the cost is passed on to the owner.

I will see how they operate on Wednesday as I will be staying with them for the duration of the work (2 hour drive there prevents much else).

I just hope this is not the beginning of major pain Sad

I have to be pessimistic but note the warranty is with MMC car sales.

Do you have it in writing?

Is it underwritten by some larger company?
