Help - Fuel filler flap not closing
Hi all,
New on here so may be asking the same old question but I have searched the forum and only found solutions for the locking / unlocking part of the fuel filler flap.
So, this might be a new issue as my local dealer couldn't answer it.
When i push the flap to close it just bounces back out as if nothing is catching. Also when I lock the car with the filler flap open the little securing pin that is supposed to pop out doesn't. My local dealer let me try a new catch that fits to the filler flap while I was there as he reckoned that this was a common part that breaks but that has not fixed it. There was a rubber seal missing which i replaced but it has not helped.
I have checked behind the jack and the cable to the actuator looks secure and the routing clear.
So my questions are:
Does the actuator operate the closing mechanism or just the lock?
Can you get a replacement part that the fuel filler flap connects into?
Does this mean i need a new actuator and how easy are they to fit?
Thanks in advance
Lee

Hi;
Easy enough to fit, no tools necessary. Here is a link to the part, however, you might want to check more localized sources first.. I believe they have a UK branch.

Iv'e just brimmed mine ready for tomorrow
I just pushed the cover and it opened and closed ok afterwards. The locking device does just that, prevents opening when car is locked.Member of the carrot crank club

I hope you fitted all the kit as i made the same mistake. you will find there is a sequence to fitting the parts correctly or it will not stay closed The part that the rubber fits over check the inside you will see what I mean

I thought there was only one way it could go as there is a pin at one side and a ridge at the other? ???
Mmmm. More probing and fiddling me thinks.

Hi Ron,
I've checked the way I've installed the two pieces and there is only one way it can go together. So I am now officially stumped.
I've soaked it all in WD40 and left it a few days but still no movement. The locking pin doesn't operate either although it does look like the end might be snapped off. Can this happen?
Anyone have any ideas?
If it is the actuator, how easy is it to replace?

Ok, so with a bit of pestering at my local Stratstones i've managed to purchase the correct parts and fixed it
As it's not a common part to break I thought I would share my limited knowledge incase anyone else has the same problem.
Looking at the fuel flap diagram below, the common part to break is the small plastic part that attaches to the flap itself (405C44). The rubber cover (021A32) was also missing from mine so initially I replaced both of these parts as per my previous posts.
However, this didn't solve the problem. So Looking at the diagram again, I ordered the remaining parts including a full new actuator just incase. It turns out the that only part i needed was the centre piece (also called an actuator) that fits in the fuel filler housing (9C070B). Just incase I replaced the two other parts within the housing, the latch (21952) and spring (405A24). And hey presto, I know have a latching flap !!!
The photo below shows the old (left) and new (right) actuators. As you can see a small lip had snapped off the old one hence the non latching.
It was a simple procedure. The plastic actuator is held in place by the two pins top and bottom that fit in pre-made holes in the hosuing. The latch and spring are held in place by the actuator. I removed my actuator with some fine nose pliers giving it a gentle tug and replace the new one with just my fingers.
Simples !!!
Hope this all makes sense and helps someone in the future. If your struggling to understand try reading it in a Geordie accent

The bit that breaks is only £1.07 + Vat in most 4x4 shop EG Paddocks, John Craddock, Island 4X4 ETC
The actuator that locks the fuel flap is a tad more expensive at around £30 unless someone knows whether the plastic plunger that locks the flap and breaks can be bought separately. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!
