Hi All,

Driving over a particulary inclement Glenshee yesterday on our way back from a nice wee break in Pitlochry (Enchanted Forest was really good), our Disco died. I started getting all sorts of warning lights and messages, so I pulled into a lay-by at which point the car cut out. I tried restarting it but there were no lights on the dash at all!
Land Rover Assistance, eventually got a recovery vehicle to us, 3h37m after the call! Like I said, it was inclement up there, high winds, driving rain and temperatures in low single figures! This was not a pleasant experience with a 6YO and a 4YO in the car!
Once home, I hooked my 90 (twin battery set-up for winching) up to the Disco, the main purpose of this was to get the tailgate open so I could let the dog out (who was now crossed legged and cross eyed!) While hooked up, I tried starting the Disco, but to no avail. I put my meter accross the Disco Battery an it read 0vdc - I checked my meter as I have never seen a Lead-acid battery read zero!
Has anyone seen this type of thing before? It's at the Dealer now (still under warranty) but just interested to see if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing.

Sounds like the alternator's packed up and stopped charging, and you've drained the life out of the battery completely. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

My Alternator Failed in this manner but fortunately I was at home.
The Battery Voltage was also 0V
I suspect that a short circuit within the alternator will completely drain the battery quite quickly.

I am thinking the alternator short theory could be right. As why else would my 2 x Exide Maxximas not start it and the 35mm2 jump leads get hot!
Be interesting to see what my dealer says.
Im also still fuming about the response from LR Assistance - does anyone have an email address for their customer services dept?

100% alternator failure and goosed battery 
when mine failed, had a AA wingman behind on the M4 with a temp battery to swop... that said not nice when yer on a major motorway with loaded trailer and the car dies to leave yer coasting to the hardshoulder 
BTW not point spending time trying to re-charge yer old battery, it really is dead, deader than a dead parrot

Got the car back yesterday, report says it was the alternator that had failed, but they say the battery is OK.
Fingers crossed that's the troubles behind us.

The same happened to me tonight.
Should have realised something was up when I started it up this morning. Was slow to start, GPS flickered etc. I thought it was because it was cold last night. On the way to work the windows were slow to lower and raise.
Starting up at work got the 'special programmes off' message. thought the battery was getting knackered
On the way home realised the radio wouldn't go very loud (low power mode). Then when coming to a roundabout every warning light came on, transmission failure warning, park brake warning etc, and then some lights I've never seen (or knew about).
Got across the roundabout into a side road then total blackout. So....
1. Put into Park
2. Call breakdown services
3. Search disco3.co.uk for +electrical +failure
4. Find this thread
5. Low loader arrives - I let driver know I have used up all my electricity and the D3 is in Park, it will need power to get it into neutral
6. Low Loader has no boost pack.
7. 2nd Breakdown truck arrives, takes a boost pack and a jump to get power to put it into neutral - no chance of starting though
8. D3 gets winched onto truck
9. Now hoping that it is the alternator.
Ironically the D3 is booked in tomorrow to my local independent for rebushing (paid for my Warranty Direct) - though it's going to be delivered on the back of a truck. Looks like I'll need to make another phone call (thank you Extra Cover!)

You may find the battery will be kippered.....i wouldnt mess around and take the chance, get a battery on it now while the weather is still reasonable....ish

Considering it took a boost pack and a jump form a recovery truck to get it just to get into neutral I fear you may be correct. Battery is less than a year old

my alternator killed an 8 month old battery when it failed. TDV6 HSE Lux (2014MY)
TDV6 HSE (2006MY - owned for 9 years and 150,000! - now replaced)

I see quite a few alternator failures....a good majority take out the battery at the time. The others will fail later on....not to bad in the summer but time winter comes,lights,heater,fbh on....goodbye battery.

Has anyone done the job themselves? I live 16000km away from the nearest stealer and becoming very confident to work on my D3 thanks to this site, would of sold it a long time ago without the detailed repair reports some of you guys put on here! I have become an expert at working on my D3 by necessity not want
