I used my Faultmate MSV-2 Thumbs Up

I've been "giving it some welly" since yesterday and although it *might* have improved slightly, it can still be provoked to slip in 2nd/3rd gears when going up a hill....

My D3 update.
Hammonds Halesworth very politely rang me today to confirm that they had changed the 'module solenoid' or whatever, and that this had absolutely no affect whatsoever.
They are now very politely changing the gearbox.
I was able to laugh about this, as I'm not footing the bill, however, I feel for anyone who has the same problem and has to pay out of their own pocket.
I am getting quite attached to the A6 Audi hirecar.
I would hope that a gearbox change would resolve the problem, but you never know.
You're never alone with a D3 problem.................

When I took it in the first thing they checked, after the software version, was water in the ATF, which they assured me was clean and without contaminant.

How did they know it was clean and uncontaminated?

It's impossible to see water in ATF unless there is a very large amount of it.

I was discussing this with the guy in the 4x4 workshop the other day and he mentioned that in the end he got a lab friend of his to analyse the ATF fluid from his FFRR (it did contain water!) before LR would take him seriously.

If the dealer just drained the oil and looked for water, then they won't see any - that doesn't mean that the radiator isn't leaking into the ATF cooler though Confused It seems crazy to swap a valve block over, never mind a complete gearbox, without first checking this out.....

Still...as you say, you're not footing the bill so can just relax until they give it back to you Laughing

Hi Guys.

I am now in my 3rd week of owning a D3. I'm sad to say however that its been in the garage for the last 2 weeks with the same problem as described.

I got a phone call from the dealer yesterday and after having the car for 2 weeks they have told me that it is the torque converter. (which I suggested when I dropped it off)

Luckily I have an extended warranty on the car, so it should all be covered, but I'm not holding my breath if their performance so far is anything to go on.

So I am now looking at another 2 weeks of the glorious Citroen C1 courtesy car !! Joy !!

Wilk keep you up to date on what happens

My D3 update.
It's still at Hammonds - how long does it take to change a gearbox on a D3 ?
The A6 seems to use just about the same amount of diesel as my D3 so there's no benefit there.

Quick to change but they could be repairing yours if under extended warranty.

Big Cry , About 2 years ago the dealer carried out a double flush under warranty as I had this autobox judder , the fault came back after around 9000 miles.

Gordon @ 4-Tec came and done a flush on it around 6 months ago but whilst towing the tintent this weekend the judder has come back , even more pronounced than ever Big Cry Big Cry

I hate LR's at the moment Evil or Very Mad

@ Steve Norman , do you have the testing kit yet for checking water in the ATF ?

HI Tawnyowl,

sorry to hear that, I do believe now that I have experienced what I have that the radiator does appear to be the cause of the problem. I would get your car checked out ASAP to minimise the damage caused by continuing to use it while juddering. Get the atf checked to se if you have water contamination as I did. You may find that it just the torque convertor that is damaged and you may not need the full transmission rebuild that I had to have??

All the best

Just to feed back to all others who are following, I have just returned from a very rainy Scotland after a weeks holiday (1200 miles). The car performed very well and I even managed a few lanes while up there. I am taking the car back to the specialist where they will check it over and do diagnostics to see that all is working as it should. BUt I am really pleased so far.

The annoying part is whilst it was in it's last year of manufacturers warranty the double flush was carried out and whilst under the extended warranty (select) Yeovil had it in MANY times but could not get the fault to appear , I even took the tintent down with me and went on a long road test with the tech and dealer principle but the fault would just not happen Sad At that point it was hit or miss when it would do it.
After the select warranty ran out it Rolling Eyes the judder became worse which is why Gordon carried out a mega flush but this has only lasted about 6 months.

I'm now left with a potentially HUGE bill Big Cry Big Cry

Ive been reading / following this post with great interest and it's becoming very clear this is a common problem .
Thanks to amondeggs and everyone else for posting all your findings and advice on this topic , I think the next step is to get it code read for any faults and have the ATF checked for coolant contamination.

amondeggs , Did you have your box refurb because your torque converter was soooo bad or because you had coolant contamination and they advised to have it done ?

Hi Tawnyowl,

I did double flush once, followed by megaflush by 4tech and then sought advice of zf specialist. They tested atf and found water contamiation due to stupid design of radiator. The water contamination destroyed the torque converetor beyond repair and hence new one fitted and once you have this water contamination you have to have the whole transmission rebuilt.

I now have seperate atf cooler fitted will post photo of it asap.

HI as promised here are a couple of photos of my atf cooler that has been fitted in front of the radiator. Sorry about quality of the pics as I had to take them in the dark.

Ive just noticed that the brackets that they have fitted are starting to go rusty Confused

I willl have to get them painted soon

Will feedback when the car goes in to be checked later this week.

By the way I have noticed that the way they have run the pipes through that they have got very close to the fuel burning heater exhaust Rolling Eyes I am a little worried that the heat from this could cause a problem with the plastic pipes. I will ask that they either fabricate a bracket or re route the pipes away from this. Just thought this is worth mentioning if any of you are thinking of doing this job yourself Question

Get them to paint or even better cold gal the brackets for you. Idea
Just had a re-conditioned box installed under extended warranty. I asked dealer to keep a sample of the old ATF when they did a flush (which didn't fix it) but they threw it out. Evil or Very Mad
New box and vibration under load gone and gear changes are as smooth as a babies bum. Thumbs Up
Hope there wasn't water in the ATF
