Yeah, you are right. They offered me a reconditioned one when I do the job over there.
New torque converter, gearbox revision, seals, oil, pan filter for € 2000 ex vat.
Plus a new € 200 radiator

touch wood, mine should be back tomorrow........ complete new auto box including torque converter/control module/pan filter/already filled with ATF, new radiator/intercooler, new oil cooler hoses, new temp sensors for intercooler & engine..... oh yea and Censored big bill Big Cry

When you say "over there", where do you mean?

I got a quote from my local LR workshop (official workshop, but not a sales dealership) and it came in at 1900 euros including VAT including 10% discount...maybe you can travel a little further and we'll get a group buy discount for both of us Laughing

The price included the items that you mentioned.

200 euros sounds cheap (mine cost 238 euros) and another 130 for fitting.....all of this plus the dreaded VAT.

Over here is Holland.
First quote I got was € 2400 ex vat. Second call was € 2000 ex vat.
Now gonna make a third call.....
But I will come to Spain Whistle

€ 200 for the radiator + € 100 for fitting, ex vat......

Do you know exactly all parts involved? Hoses etc?

Juts made the third call. Quote € 3415 ex vat.
This was a ZF specialist who works for Landrover Holland and came recommended by ZF Holland.

They told me that their quote included a new torque converter and a new Megatronics computer.
He said that this was the only way to do it right. He believed that many other left the megatronics and would just clean it, hence the cheaper quote's.

So, what do I do besides Big Cry ?

Do they mean the "mechatronic" valve block? There is no reason to change the transmission ECU? Question

For 4000 euros (inc VAT) I would ask LR for the price to fit a completely new box (as per Character) - it can't be much more expensive.

Yes I do mean the mechatronic valve block. I have been told by 3 different companies that this part has been contarminated as well. It can be cleaned but preferable needs a new one......

TLO is on holiday so can't ask him for a quote for a new gearbox but if I google it I see advertised prices of 3.300 pounds. Depending on Nicks quote it might be worth while to buy a new gearbox.......

How very sad... ...it is to know that some problems already existed BEFORE production of the LR 3 started with that very same automatic gearbox [ ZF 6HP26 ] ;

6-speed autoboxes have required software upgrades. Torque converter failures of 6-speed automatics (known as "gearbox squark") have become quite common. Problem of lurching of ZF autobox covered at www.thelurch.com plus numerous other Jaguar TSBs. This can be temporarily alleviated by using different automatic transmission fluid and an additive. Jaguar has replaced transmissions on 3 - 5 year old cars for as little as £770, calling it a "25% contribution", though the true customer cost of a new transmission would be more than £3,080.

Like Mercedes and Renault, the automatic transmission fluid cooler is situated in the radiator where a fracture can put
coolant into the transmission fluid and wreck the transmission.

Seems to be a problem with the 'electronic' (electric) parking brakes failing to disengage properly, leading to excess wear on the rear discs and rear disc life as short as 15,000 miles.

Lurch #2 on Jag TBS can be solved on the D3 by updating the automatic gearbox software (as per ZF/LR instruction). The software update worked on my D3, lurch #2 disappeared, I never had lurch #1.

A new gearbox will cost you around € 3500 incl. VAT, excl. labour Big Cry

My gearbox was fine until the last service at 132000km. When I got the vehicle back I had a very strange problem. When I pressed the brake the park lights would come on, and when the lights were on the vehicle woul d not change gear in Auto only in Command Shift. I took it back and they informed me that it needed a software upgrade which they did and it appeared to solve the problem. However I seem to have this judder problem now, but it only seems to be when I am standing at a robot in gear. Once I get going I dont feel it anymore. It doesnt feel like its slipping though, but rather like its biting and wanting to jerk forward.

I have a question regarding the water contamination. If the water is leaking where do you check to see if water levels are dropping? I ve checked mine and all the levels are OK. Surely they must drop if it is leaking?

For information purposes my torque converter was changed at 80000km.

... You mean a traffic light? There is no measurable 'drop' in level of coolant. The tiny cracks that let the coolant trhough means you speak of centiliters per month, which might as well leave the circuit once it overheats or an airbubble left somewhere in the system escapes. The chemicals as glycol dilute the oil and as much as a 'wrong type' of gearbox oil can be damaging, a small percentage [1-no level known glycol] building up over time in the gearbox oil, does its damage. Crying or Very sad

Thank you for your reply. Yes I meant traffic lights we call them robots Smile I wonder why the dealer did not check for contamination or repair the leak when they changed the Torque converter the first time?

Hi CromptonS, there is a range of problems with TC's , gearboxes etc. Some have comparable symptons.. so the Torque Converter can have failed due to hauling heavy loads [trailer] uphill [or offroad] in high gearing or with high speed in 'D' . If you read the manual with the car, you can see that LowGearing is preferred for hard work, and preferrably in a manually selected 'fixed' gear to eliminate TC'slip [=heat generation --> burning]. The TC normally damage by overheating. Hence the ATF smells burned and is changed with the TC. Sad So how do you use the car is the key question in finding out why the TC failed... Rolling Eyes Once this ATF is changed, you will wait a few months generally, before enough Glycol leaked into the ATF [it's not ATF, just for the shortnote's sake...], before you can proof its presence again. Yawn If the TC damages due to the glycol, it is because it damages the lamellae in the TC where it makes them swell [I've read this somewhere, cannot remember witch posting... Sheep ].
