South Africa 2006 Discovery 3 4.0 V6 Petrol S Auto Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

Thank you for the information, I do tow a large caravan but do not strain the vehicle too much when towing I hope. Anyway I have it booked in for tomorrow to see what the fault is. I do have a little hope though thats its not gearbox or torque converter related, it seems to be some sort of a splutter at idle. Its almost like it has a miss on th engine at low revs and as it catches the vehicle wants to jerk forward. When listenening to the engine it soundes like its spluttering. What also happend was that the engine went into limp mode. I thought I would accelerate hard to see if I could get it to slip though the gears but I got a message "Engine Performance Reduced" and had to stop and switch off. If I drive normally then its ok just the jerking or judder at idle in gear

Im am pleased to feed back that it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor that was causing the jerking. Interestingly I thought it would be an expensive part, but it wasnt. R384.00 about £38 however the labours was a wopping R2000 about £200.

Any way im pleased it wasnt the torque converter again

[quote="lee157"]I'm watchimg these posts with a lot of interest as i have a 54 plate D3 and would never be able to afford a bill as hi as that, so i'm also wondering about a preventative measure too.

Is this ATF cooling/heating system actually part of the radiator? or is it a seperate unit all together?

I can't find a good picture from microcat for the D3 but i found that the D4's have a seperate unit all together.

Does anyone know if this is a double skin unit?

Double skin meaning that if it leaks it will leak on the floor and not contaminate the other fluid, unless both sides develope a leak at the same time.

Lee[/quote

Sorry for bumping but... did somebody try to fit (or investigate) wether the "ousider" cooler from D4s can be retrofitted to D3s?

Best regards from Spain

Hi Robert,

There are many posts on the issue of ATF/gearbox/glycol. These are just an example Big Cry
- http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic55986.html
- http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic63826.html

It boils down to : radiator has oil-heatexchanger built into cooling liquid radiator. Single skin aluminium structure. Under vibrations welds/joints wil crack eventually. Known issue from jaguar/bmw X5 etc cars with same engine/rad setup. The glycol will built up in the gearboxoil and damage the torqueconverter. Preventive measures : exchange the radiator. Part is not very expensive. Total job is, because also aircon has to be refilled etc. Many of these jobs have to be done anyway if you keep the car longer. I decided to replace the rad by an original because my car was 5yrs old and 'midlife' anyway. No point to wait until the car would be 6 years old and run the risk of gearbox damage...
In south-africa members fitted outside coolers but then you have to plug the holes of the gearbox on the rad, and you need to change the pipes/hoses... Not really a saving I guess. But if you do not want to invest this much, take a sample of the gearboxoil and have it tested at a ZF service centre. They probably have the kit for it!

Thumbs Up

Hi there,
thank you so much for the reply.
In my case it's not the fact if I want or not to invest so much, whast I want (even if I'm unsure about how long can I or will I keep the car) is to fix the problem once and for all.
-There is a design fault, the rads are not fit for purpose
-Adding that the OAT coolant is hightly corrosive and when not renewed it eats up gaskets, seals and whatever it can as it turns acid with time.
-Rad has been superceded many times. In my case (a V8) part is LR021777.
Superceded parts are PCC500041 PCC500630 PCC500630 PCC500040 (the fitted one is PCC500630). All this crazy parts superceding issue might have something to do with a high rate failure.

-What I don't want is paying for a rad and for the job to fit it, plus the cooling system refill, to have the new part fail on me in short time. I expect that the new radiator is better built. From a photo available in Land rover parts shop it looks that the cooler has been updated "à la 300 Tdi style", I mean, as a small cylindrical reservoir fitted into the left hand plastic tank. It appears as better built so Maybe I would give it a go
Or maybe the bodged it, buying the same thing from another supplier who apparently built it better. We will never know.

Would be great to place a sticky here to post some more updates on the subject.

I will be upgrading the rad as a matter of course for the 5th year /60K service, due before spring.

Best regards and thank you
Robert

There is a company in NEW JERSEY , that came out with simple acustrips for testing for glycol contamination in ATF fluids. So , instead if sending your sample back to the LAB for diagnosis, you guys can do it yourself for less then a minute. They sell 100 strips for 28 US dollars.I just thought , this may help in faster and cheaper diagnosis.

Thank you so much for the link, will order a set ASAP

Best regards from the other side of the pond
Robert

P.S. would be glad if any D4 owners (V8 5,0 petrol/gas powered) could send pics of the cooling hoses and position of the cooler to see if D3 V8 owners can replicate the layout
If a D4 front end and tail can be fitted into a D3, why not the cooling system?

I have a feeling that the D4 cooler will just bolt straight on, after that it will need to be tapped into the engine cooling system which there isn't a dedicated fitment for as the D4 engine cooling system is completely different to the D3.

However i was looking into a unit from the RRS 4.2 supercharged which is a simple splice into the cooling pipe and fit a plastic reducer which is a 50% diverter/mixed.

Unfortunately i have only gone as far as looking.

Hi guys, very interesting to read all this and all the effort you put in to share what you know and have experienced.
You make me a worry a bit ... For the next maintenance where they will change the gearbox oil, I would like to know what the double flush really means and if you really need it (what is the advantgae versus a normal change of oil)? And should the filter be changed as well? I have a 2005 V8 petrol Disco III With 120000Km, and live in The NL.
Especially for Dan and Renton, do you have information for me please where to go to test the gearbox oil to see if it is contaminated with glycol?
Thank you so much, Michele!

Thank you so much Lee for your valuable picture upgrading.
It's quite clear we won't be able to use the D4 layout, as the cooling system is a totally different beast (don't know how the changed the engine so much), so maybe the bodge is to try to adapt the RRS layout.
Maybe we will have to wait and see a RRS Supercharged on the workshop to take measures and carefully adapr the thing.

Best regards
Robert

Hi Lee,
I've been looking at the layout and that diverter 50% makes the function as a recirculating bit when the thermostat is closed.
It's the same layout as the D3 V8 4.4 (part identified as 8260A in the graphic)

Hmm, looking at the D4 layout it gets the coolant supply from the lower part of the radiator (cooler fluid) and that goes directed into the water pump intake hose.

Maybe the engine cooling system introduction in the topix workshop manual can clarify matters a little bit in order not to mess everything when we perform the modification in order not to disturb coolant circulation.

The only way I see in the D3 4.4 V8 (please correct me) is getting a D4 rad (hope top hose is the same), fitting it in place, the lower outer hose connected to the trans cooler, getting a T-piece to connect the trans cooler outlet pipe to the diverter lower part (8260 A).
Cheers
Robert
