Re-fill it through the filler plug on the side of the diff.

England 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Arctic FrostDiscovery 3

It's held in by a circling 'ring' in a grove on the end on the actual splined shaft, I used combination of a pry bar, short piece of hard wood and a lump hammer to prise/drift the shaft out of the diff Thumbs Up

Be careful if you pull too hard on the shaft, and definitely don't yank on the shaft or you risk making the CV joint come apart (and the are a real Censored to get back together) Crying or Very sad

I just followed this great guide to replace an inner CV boot.
But I also could not get the drive shaft out of the diff. I tried all kinds of methods but it wouldn't give.

In the end I cut and removed the old boot and pulled the shaft with bearings out of the joint and just left the other part of the CV joint in the diff.

This gives the same end result and saves draining the diff.

succesful CV boot replacement

Great write up. I replaced the boots without taking the brake off, instead unbolting the upper swingarm, steering and roll bar. Probably easier to removed the brakes through as there was only just enough room to fit the shaft back in.

Very tough getting the shaft out of the diff! Had a helpful friend Confused who putted the inner CV joint out of its casing too, which made it more difficult because you can't get it back in without cutting the boot, which is what we did.

Hello from Germany,

I have to change my left (driver side) drive shaft - the short one.

Somewhere I read that it is not necessary to drain the diff oil if you jack up the car very obliquely?

Any ideas to this?

Had mine changed recently and none ran out of the diff as was on ramps that side. I changed the oil last summer so know that the correct amount was in the diff.

Anyone had trouble with the cv parts being seized on the shaft? Garage I rang for a quote to change the boot said they have had it a few times, obviously a new shaft required then and the cost doubles....so I may as well buy a new shaft when my tools arrive from down under and change it myself...

I also think my boot has been split for several weeks so may be contaminated, too many variables for my liking!

Great write up Thumbs Up did mine today took just under 1.75 hours incl all tools away, as DiscoGaz not a drop of diff oil came out on mine when shaft pulled so that certainly saves time.
The large cv gaiter clip diff end is certainly entertaining and took me a good few minutes to work out how it worked.

I did buy a glue boot kit and have used them before on other cars, but I then found an oe gaiter kit on ebay for 10 quid delivered so used that instead.

I have read this instruction several times and I can't determine if the outer joint can be separated from the shaft or is cleaned in place once the boot is removed?

What stops the inner joint separating when you pull out the assembly from the diff? Is it the boot that holds it together?

Is it worth replacing the seal on the diff at the same time or is this an internal seal?

Also do you need or not need to drain the diff oil? Mine is very new and most seem to suggest it doe not leak out once lifted on an angle.

Also what torque on the top control arm ball joint nut?

A, remove whole shaft using a lever bar and a bit of brute force from the diff.

What stops the inner joint separating when you pull out the assembly from the diff? Is it the boot that holds it together?
A, yes I think its only the boot that keeps it together

A, up to you didnt do mine and no leaks so far

A. didnt drain mine and no oil lost at all and as you are only jacking on side up the car is naturally at an angle

Also what torque on the top control arm ball joint nut?
A, dont know but tight sufficed for me

Keep an eye on the ABS sensor as you remove/refit the drive shaft into the hub.
