Make sure you change your gearbox oil regularly. Consider fitting additional cooler and/or fan and monitor temperature when towing. 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

Hi all. I’m a complete newcomer to Land Rover Discovery ownership.
I own a 1959 Land Rover SeriesII 88”, but decided I wanted something a little more spacious and comfortable to accompany me into my dotage, so I’ve bought my self a 14 year-old Disco4 TDV6 XS.
So far ( and I’ve only had it a few weeks), I love the vehicle. It’s so smooth, comfortable, fast, luxurious and somehow “classy”.
It has a few minor faults, the kind to be expected in a 14 year-old vehicle, some corrosion on the wheels, minor dings scratches & dents in the bodywork, and the inevitable faulty rear top part of the tailgate not opening on the remote. I believe this is a common and easily fixed fault, and my mechanic is booked in to fix it. I expected to get some repairs, fixes and servicing done, and have budgeted accordingly.
But it has “Land Rover” on the bonnet, and that does mean something to me, now that JLR have decided to drop the name.
Running an older vehicle is a bit of a hobby, and I enjoy keeping the vehicle in good order, stopping it from becoming a “banger”, so I’m looking forward to some good times with my new toy.
Hopefully, I can be a useful contributor on here, and I look forward to picking some brains for advice, and providing some thoughts on my experience.

I have a disco 4 only done 130,000km a few weeks ago warning sign came up 'restricted performance'
Went to local garage. Found air filter full of oil. Suggested someone may have overfilled with oil. Cleaned up appeared to cure but after 5 weeks same again plus the engine light and restricted performance. Same garage say that the turbo's will need replacing.
Has anyone experienced anything similar. Advice please

Help please Report post
Hi I’m more than likely in the wrong thread
Im new to this and anything like this I still use one finger to write messages 😂
I’ve got a disco 3 07 plate I’ve had major problems with it since I bought it 3 years ago , but I’m very hands on and stubborn.
About 8 months ago the air suspension gave up and after weeks of checking it all out with soapy water
I decided to change it to coil springs
I did this took about a week 🤣
Now when I drive it it’s started to make a grinding sound like the front brakes are trying to come on but then 2 amber warning lights come on and it drives fine
The lights are the triangle with circle arrow round it and the circle one with the pads at the side
Im really really stuck and any help would be appreciated
Once again I’m sorry if this is the wrong group or tread

Hi all,
Had a D2 for about 9 years, always quite fancied a D3. I decided I'd go for it about 6 months ago and it's taken me this long to find one with all the specifications I wanted. I've got a manual HSE that's about 15 years old now, really pleased with it!!!
I'll be doing easy to intermediate work on it myself, hoping that the lack of space in the engine bay doesn't make that too tricky, but will be leaving more advanced work to a local land rover specialist.
I have extremely little experience with forums and no understanding of social media at all so although I'm reasonably IT savvy generally this type of thing is very new to me!!

Welcome Useless, disco-rob and Johnnie.
Useless and disco-rob, I would recommend firstly using the search link at the top of the home page to see if any similar issues have been reported and resolved. Several on here have moved to coil springs for instance.
Secondly you are best reporting your faults in the specific D3/ D4 Faults section . Link below (but you can get to this by scrolling down the home page and locating it too)
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/faults-fixes-d3-vf10.html
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/faults-fixes-d4-vf48.html
There’s a great deal of expertise and experience on this forum and I’m sure you’ll get some input. Good luck resolving your issues and with your Discos.
Cheers Gary

I'm a new to me owner of a 2009 LR3 after having a 1998 Range Rover Sport since 2001. I'm interested in finding some info on a back-up camara for the LR3 as I feel the visibility is an issue. Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated. Intergrated through existing systems or stand alone. Comments appreciated.
Thx.

Hi
I have owned Defenders and Series Land Rovers over the past few years. I have always liked the idea of a Discovery 3 and took the plunge a couple of months ago. It's a 2008 TDV6 SE in Silver. It has a few problems which I am working my way through but despite that I am enjoying it. Cheers

Hi All
Just bought a D4 (2014) in Aintree Green, so looking forward to doing a little gentle greenlaning. First thing though, is to make sure that all is well with the car. Fitted Falken AT Wildpeak tyres all round, which seem to be good on road, so will see what they are like off road. Next upgrade will be to improve the headlamps as they are truly poor.
Looking forward to keeping up to date with the forum and seeking help from knowledgeable members when needed.

Hi All,
After searching the classifieds endlessly to find a basic Jeep or Jimny type of vehicle as a second/hobby car I got extremely frustrated at the cult status pricing of these things in Germany. Anything remotely affordable has a problem that the owner gave up on and looks like it hasn't had even an oil change in the last 5 years.
I noticed that Discos on the other hand were undervalued because owners wanted to sell before the next big service was coming up (but still before catastrophe struck). I got a MY2008 2.7 TDV6 HSE with 300,000 km on the clock. Service records ended around 160,000 km and I think the timing belt was changed at 132,000. No record of any other major repairs.
I keep waiting for the hammer to fall. I've added a few thousand kms, bought an IID tool, and so far I've only found a few minor issues. Front park distance control, shudder braking at exactly 100kmh, weak battery, and a nasty "oil leak" at the intercooler. I disabled the front PDC with the IID, replaced the battery and decided to wait on cleaning out the intercooler until after my planned "DPF reset". I figured if the DPF reset is just "blowing it out" with extended high RPM driving, that would probably blow out the intercooler as well... it worked perfectly.
I'm planning my first service to include timing belt, water pump, and oil change. I'm 99% sure I'll do the oil pump as well for the piece of mind, but the amount of extra work is driving me insane. The lack of records tells me to replace everything I can, but the fact that it runs smooth as silk at that age and mileage makes me think it couldn't have been neglected.
The previous owner was clueless, but his relatives in a foreign land had an indy shop and just "did stuff" whenever he visited them. He has no idea what they did but he gave them a lot of money. I've been "drinking from the fire hose" on all of these forums and checking out all of the typical issues, and it appears that they really did stay on top of everything. If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is.
