I've got Continental Winter Contacts and used them through last winter, including trips to the alps. VERY good in the wet and exceptional in the snow. They'll be going back on mine in a couple of weeks as the temperatures start to drop below 10C
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

We will be having an Indian summer here in the UK this year, don't expect temps to drop below 10C until early December! Best not get those spanners out just yet eh ? Laughing Very Happy Thumbs Up

Just for the record, I'm as confused as some of the others, currently have Zeros that need replacing and a set of MTR's in the garage for off-roading. So what do I replace the zeros with for winter and summer driving with the possibility of snow in the UK, and the possibility of 30+C in the summer. I got around OK on the zeros last winter, so should I be worried ? Maybe ATR's are the way to go for full time tyres ! Will the Wintracs melt in Summer and be crap the following winter ?

Oh my head hurts. Big Cry

Studless wintertires are not made for dry warm roads. Braking is not as good either due to the soft rubber.
They will wear down and you will get bad wintertires the next season.

The trouble with the MTR's is that they are alot noisier on the slab than zeros and are not as comfortable either (19"), otherwise I would !

Agreed, which is why I'll be waiting for temps to drop below 10c at the time of day I usually drive before I fit them. Thumbs Up

Sounds reasonable, I'm gonna run my OEM scorpion zero atleast until 1th nov. Then I'm allowed to put on my brand new Nokian Hakka Suv 5 studded tires. We actually got snow in the mountains last night over 1200 meters Very Happy

Just been kicking tyres at Cardiff LR stealer and they have an 08 TDV8 FFRR on the forecourt with brand new Wintrac Extreme 4s on the front and half worn scorps on the back. That should make for an interesting combo in the snow!!!

It would be interesting to say the least to watch a FFRR lose the back end Shocked

Thinking of replacing my tyres on my D4 (19") when I pick it up next week, mainly for winter (live in NE of Scotland and when the snow hits, it's usually heavy - plus we have lots of icy mornings, wet days, I'll be heading up to the hills to go skiing etc etc).

Can anyone recommend a good all round tyre for winter that won't wear down to quickly? I found the Wranglers on my D3 to be particularly useless on snow last season.
?

Have a word with Graham Tawse at Tawse Tyres in Inverurie for some advice - he runs LR's himself - sold me the Wintrac 4 Extreme's a while back rather than more expensive Pirellis! - turned out to be a superb tyre in winter (as he said they would be) & amazingly they are about as good as the Pirellis in summer + wear better!

AT2s - good compromise for mud and snow and tarmac?

I'm also up in Aberdeenshire and use the Disco 4 for shooting so need tires for muddy trails plus snow plus commute to work. I had general grabber ATs on my Land Cruiser thanks to Tawse Tires and wondered whether I should change the Pirelli Scorpions over before (more) snow arrives? Pricing makes them more attractive than Pirelli's ATRs but is there a large difference in capability?

Winter tyres revisited following 2009-2010 snow

Hi everyone, I have just bought a used D3 XS Auto which has almost brand new tyres put on by the dealer, Continentals on the front and Wranglers on the back, and they seem good for road use and reaching our house across less than good farm tracks. Having said that I am, with the benefit of hindsight from our 5 week isolation in 10 to 12 inches of snow across the Xmas/Hogmanay period last winter, now looking for a set of winter tyres with wheels for the D3. Yes, we can get decent snow on the Galloway Forest Park.

I should also point out that I got out through the snow in my '92 Jeep Wrangler on new Advantage Retreads bought off eBay,

When I bought the D3 I opted to revert to the 17" wheels as the greater amount of rubber will protect the wheels when climbing the last rocky track to our house. I am therefore looking for for a similar setup for the winter tyres, although I am considering whether to look for a wheel with a slightly greater offset, or less inset, than my current wheels.

I have looked at 4SITE4X4 web site and they come up with Toyo Open Country A/T that refers to good wet and snow traction and the Yokohama Geolandar A/T for my kind of mixed surface driving.

Does anyone have any experience of these tyres?

Andy at AJS, can you cast your mind back about a year and your comment that Wintracs are tops, is this still so and what are they like on tarmac?
