Those MTR's looks a very extreme pattern for what I would need. Doubt I'll be doing too much offroading, but want the grip on snow and ice when it comes.
Any other recommendation? Keep em coming and thanks in advance. If in doot, flat oot!!

Same here, they might have been spinning but I didn't notice and I was moving forward very nicely thanx. However my zero's are coming to and end soon, has anyone tried hankooks or toyos ?

Landy lad : Having rang the aberdeen tyre dealers for a quote this morning you might want to go for the Wintracs you saw on-line the usual suspects here are 50 % more than that fitted...two weeks lead time at the moment..Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I only have one axle worth of Pirelli ATRs at present, but can confirm that they are way way better in the snow than the Pirelli Zeros I had previously.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Have ran Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extremes as my winter tyres for 3 years and can't rate them highly enough. Got me everywhere in the snows we had in February 09 in the UK (Cotswolds), and have got me everywhere in the Czech Republic during the winter months in PROPER snow!

Has anyone any experience of Nokian winter tyres. Don't know how much they cost or how easy they are to get hold of, but they look pretty impressive...........

When at the Land Rover Dealer yesterday noticed they had a D4 XS with Pirelli snow and Ice tyres on it ... so it must be possible to specify the car to come new with mud and snow tyres on it..Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme are a very good tyre and would be my choice for 19", but on 18" would stick with AT2.

Vredestein Arctrac SUV
I got Vredestein Arctrac SUV (265/65/17) last winter and they where really good on both icy roads as well as on snow. Good grip and they "release" the snow very easily.
Very satisfied indeed.

Nokian Tyres
Lady M
I live in the French alps and have used 'Hakkapeliitta R SUV' for the last 2 winters - no scary moments and great traction in all sorts of snow depths. Its the only 4x4 snow tyre I have used so its difficult to compare but i would buy them again. A neighbour/pal of mine put Pirelli snow/ice on his D3 last winter and was equally happy.TDV6 HSE AUTO

Are there winter tyres available with the snowflake sign on it that you need is Austria and you can use all year?
I have a set off Wrangler HP's and a set off MTR's but they don't have the snowflake either. I would like to change the HP's for a set off proper wintertyres but would like to use them also in warmer weather.
I don't want a third set off tyres for the D3 as I have also a 90 TD5 with 2 sets off tyres.Roel

I think that the general opinion here in Norway is that AT2's and MTR's are straight forward dangerous to drive thru our winter. They might give good traction in deep snow, but on regular icey roads they are useless. Traction is one thing, but more important is that we also want to be able to stop our 2700kg cars, and not skid out in the first corner.
If I where to choose it would be the AT2's I would go for, in that case with studs, but I suppose that is Illegal in the UK aswell as central Europe.
Last winter I put on about 15.000km on my D3 with the OEM Pirelli Ice&Snow, I think these have a to hard rubber compound for otimal grip on ice and roads thru mountain passes, but I think they would work good in central europe and UK, thats what they are build for.
The Nokian Hakkapelitta SUV studless tires are really good, and these are propper winter tires, with a soft rubber compound to provide good grip on ice.
For this season Im going to put on some Nokian Hakka 5 Suv studded tires in 255/55-19"
I do know that of course that UK and Europe don't see the kind of winterconditions in the long run that we have here in Norway, but If some of you need tires to feel safe on slippery winter mornings, you are better off leaving the MTR's and AT2's in the store and go for some Nokians/Vredesteins or something proper studdless.
