What did I stumble upon?
Today I got E fault on dash. Couldn't start car.
Then stumbled onto something...
Tried to remove the Starter Motor Relay. Cover came off instead.
With E fault, and key at position III, Physically pressing the starter motor relay the car starts...no idea why.
Tomorrow is another day. Will try figure out why the E on dash

Thanks Pete.
What might have caused?
1. Today I took apart the centre console. Had a look and put it together again. I was chasing a suspension fault.
2. I also undid the fuse box. Turned it over to see if there was anything out of place in the wires behind the battery.
3. Removed all the relays and fuses. Cleaned them and put them back.
4. Rains in last two days. Water under drivers football. Alot to dry with towels. So punched a small hole on floor and water drained.
Maybe this was the cause? What are possible ways to resolve?
Thanks.

I’d unplug the gearbox plug under the car , inspect
And refit it

I would have a read of the wiring diagram and see how the start relay is inhibited.
Have you swapped the relays around?
Is it an auto? is the selector pivot seized?
Have you read the codes?

Yes. Pressing starter motor relay (now edited) as shown by screwdriver. Sorry about the mix up.
Yes. The gear stick is stuck at P.
No. Haven't read codes. Will do so.
No. I didn't swap relays. Put back all where they were originally at.
Yes. It is an auto. Not sure what the selector pivot is. Will Google and get back.
Yes. At some point I had totally removed the negative battery cable.
I will check all as adviced later in the day. I will post solution once found.

Erm because the relay only has one job, to start the engine?
Bit like I pulled the trigger and a bullet killed a man, don't know why the bullet came out?

Is the selector lever stuck at park and won't budge?

Left the car. Tried to start it after 2 days.
The E fault gave way to Fault. Gear lever became operational.
Tried again today the F fault has also gone. No idea why.
Thanks Nutterwatts for the link. Now I know what that white lever is for.
I did check all items as adviced. Later on I will get codes.
