Starter motor question

Hi guys, do you know if the starter motor has an internal "thermal fuse/breaker"?

In cold start conditions (-7°C) during cranking the starter stops itself after few seconds despite the key remain on "start" position.

Any clue?

It will be low battery voltage.

When you turn the key, you don't send a signal to the starter solenoid. On a D3, you send a signal to the ECU, and it sends one to the starter.

So if the main battery voltage is low, the ecu will not have sufficient voltage to maintain the signal to the starter, and so you get the 'runs breifly and then stops' behaviour.

Drop test the battery, check the alternator output. Change either / both as appropriate Thumbs Up

Having watched your video, I think you might have one or two glowplugs missing as well..
New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

The starter cut out also whit a battery booster connected, anyway checking the voltage on both (battery and alternator) it seems to maintain a good value with a normal voltage drop.

Maybe when the engine fires briefly it’s throwing the starter out and is sticking and not coming back in? Maybe worth pulling the starter off and checking it on the bench?

Pete.

So in that video, you say the starter stopped itself? 2 times

Be nice to have a video of the dash and nav display while you are starting it

From the sound of the speed of cranking, I would say the battery is strong. When the engine 'catches' the starter does disengage and stop. That's normal behavior.

However, your engine is catching but not running. There is a lot of smoke, and it takes a good minute before its running anything like smoothly.

You say you have new glow plugs, however that is showing all the symptoms of some or all not working. Other than that, you could be looking at worn injectors.

It's curious also that idle do not self increase around 1000 rpm in that cold situation...

From what i read on the workshop manual, idle is modulated from the electric load management inside the actm...

During the engine warm-up period, the ATCM manages the electrical load to make sure that the battery voltage is maintained above a pre-determined level. The battery voltage level that is maintained and the duration of the start period varies with ambient air temperature and engine coolant temperature. After the engine warm-up period, the ATCM manages the electrical load to make sure that the requested electrical load does not exceed the generator output.
The duration of the engine warm-up period depends on the ambient air temperature and the engine coolant temperature when the ignition is switched on,

could the bolded text be the cause of premature starter cutout?

And another info is that in warmer conditions the engine starts pretty well Neutral

The Engine coolant temperature sensor has been changed in the last season but it hasn't solved the problem

do you have an IID to check the air temp sensor is working ?
