SERIOUS ADVICE PLEASE
can i get some pragmatic advice please from you guys who have mountains of experience and expertise
i bought-my first Disco 3 2008 xs auto in Feb this year 79k miles absolutely mint all around
it has been serviced by JLR EVERY 5/6 k miles
i have replaced Oil pump prop shaft all belts tensioners , all lower arms , expansion bottle, prop shaft
it already had a new compressor and alternator, brakes and discs in 2018
oil service and filter and 2 gearbox oil and filter changes including metal pan done within 500 miles
all done as preventative maintenance
my question is ? do i have Forum neurosis after reading all the faults that crop up on here or as my local LR GUY says a lot of people buy high mileage poorly maintained vehicles and the wonder why they keep breaking down ?
to be honest i hold my breath every time i start it up even though it goes first click and is a fantastic drive.
appreciate your serious comments please

Drive it and enjoy it...end of
you cant predict when or if it will go wrong.
I'm on my 8th or 9th Discovery cant remember which
my first D3 was the first ever LR that I had to scrap, did all the preventative maintenance and even had the chassis treated as I expected to own it for some time however the engine let go at 137k and that was the end of it.
Lasted 5 weeks after swearing that my LR journey had come to an end, bought a low mileage D3 and for the first 2 or 3 weeks sweated every time I heard an unfamiliar noise but over time learned to enjoy the drive once again, worried not really if it goes it goes but hopefully not.

The best advice I can give you is to use it, enjoy it and stop worrying.
These beasties are better when they are used. They don't like sitting around and short journeys. I owned my Old Bus nearly 14 years from new and sold it with 232k on the clock. Its still going strong and was well used when I had her.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control

Absolutely. Mine’s been more reliable in years 12-13 than the first three. The year before that it needed a gearbox and TC and drives better than new now. It’s well maintained by someone who’s on this forum. There’s a list of jobs that need doing to keep it that way, but the cost of those and a new engine would still be less than the first year’s depreciation. Nothing else does so many things so well. Enjoy driving yours!

Had mine since new, now got 178k miles on the clock and love every minute of it. You get the occasional hiccough but thats the same with any car. Treat it well, service it regularly and you should be fine.
In 12 years of ownership I have only twice needed to call out the recovery man - one for a failed alternator (and I only called the recovery guy so I could get it to my favourite indy to put a new one on as we were going on holiday that day and had a ferry to catch) and the other for a mis-fuel (doh!)D3 - 2008.5MY HSE, Stornaway Grey, RSE etc - all the toys
Grabber AT3s, Smoked Sweeping Side Repeaters
D4 Steering Wheel with BBS boards
IID BT Tool - happy to help with fault codes
I, too, sometimes get the c-word thought in my head. Then some in an Audi/BMW cuts me up and I start "driving like I nicked it". The permagrin returns and I'm back in love.

It’s the down side of DIY maintenance, you are forever listening and feeling for something that isn’t there after you’ve DIY, just get in it and drive And enjoy it with the traditional LR permagrin, the paranoid Will wear off given time I can assure you. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It sounds like most things of that might need doing have been done.
Stop worrying, and start thinking about all the wonderfully useless things you can add to it, like a huge sticker for the bonnet that has D3 on it just in case you forget, or a remote control for the fuel burning heater, a heated steering wheel, a second battery with a controller, a whole bank of electric sockets in the boot, a fridge in the cubby box, a screen the size of an average 80s tv in the place where the radio used to be, the list is almost endless. er ... you forgot the disco3.co.uk sticker. MUST get one of those !!

All of the above and enjoy it . I often wonder how many people don’t actually buy a disco because they talk themselves out of it . Pity them because they never get to have that daft smile you have every time you drive it
Only had mine 2.5 months , done 5k miles and I still can’t park it without looking back at it , my true test of a car you love .
Had a lot of cars over many years but this is one of the best ever .

I’ve had my Disco since August and I love everything about it.
When I say everything, I’m obviously not including road tax or fuel consumption
I did have concerns about the cost of maintenance and repairs so I decided to do all of the basic maintenance and repair work myself.
The first thing I did was front pads and disks. Both calliper hangers where seized causing the pads to wear unevenly. I managed to repair them quite easily though.
After that, I managed to destroy the spare wheel hanger whilst changing wheels because of a puncture. To buy new they are around £80, but I got one second hand £20.
Next was the handbrake shoes. Turns out that the electronic hand brake control module was knackered causing both sets of shoes to wear down to the metal, and ruining the disks. The module issue was easily fixed at no cost, I replaced the shoes, disks and pads when I discovered the rear calliper hangers where also knackered. I managed to repair one, but snapped the pin on the other forcing me to buy a brand new hanger.
In total it’s cost me around £300 in parts and I reckon I’ve saved around £1000 by doing all of that myself.
My Disco is 14yrs old with 170k miles on the clock and it’s obvious that it was worked by the previous owners, so I expect there to be issues. I’ve never worked with cars before so it’s been a huge learning curve for me, and it’s something that I’ve genuinely enjoyed doing too.12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!
