can i get some pragmatic advice please from you guys who have mountains of experience and expertise
i bought-my first Disco 3 2008 xs auto in Feb this year 79k miles absolutely mint all around
it has been serviced by JLR EVERY 5/6 k miles
i have replaced Oil pump prop shaft all belts tensioners , all lower arms , expansion bottle, prop shaft
it already had a new compressor and alternator, brakes and discs in 2018
oil service and filter and 2 gearbox oil and filter changes including metal pan done within 500 miles
all done as preventative maintenance

my question is ? do i have Forum neurosis after reading all the faults that crop up on here or as my local LR GUY says a lot of people buy high mileage poorly maintained vehicles and the wonder why they keep breaking down ?
to be honest i hold my breath every time i start it up even though it goes first click and is a fantastic drive.
appreciate your serious comments please

Like everyone has so far said just drive it like you stole it, enjoy it and have fun.

Don’t worry about events you can’t predict or influence at all.

Thumbs Up

I did have concerns about the cost of maintenance and repairs so I decided to do all of the basic maintenance and repair work myself.
The first thing I did was front pads and disks. Both calliper hangers where seized causing the pads to wear unevenly. I managed to repair them quite easily though.
After that, I managed to destroy the spare wheel hanger whilst changing wheels because of a puncture. To buy new they are around £80, but I got one second hand £20.
Next was the handbrake shoes. Turns out that the electronic hand brake control module was knackered causing both sets of shoes to wear down to the metal, and ruining the disks. The module issue was easily fixed at no cost, I replaced the shoes, disks and pads when I discovered the rear calliper hangers where also knackered. I managed to repair one, but snapped the pin on the other forcing me to buy a brand new hanger.

In total it’s cost me around £300 in parts and I reckon I’ve saved around £1000 by doing all of that myself.

My Disco is 14yrs old with 170k miles on the clock and it’s obvious that it was worked by the previous owners, so I expect there to be issues. I’ve never worked with cars before so it’s been a huge learning curve for me, and it’s something that I’ve genuinely enjoyed doing too.

I’m a guy who used to take lease vehicles to the shop and not give “AF” what they did to them. When I got my first disco I decided that I’d try to do all work I’m comfortable with myself. I started with cabin filter and stickers. My comfort level on taking on small things has grown a lot but I’ve also had the kids as helpers which they’ve liked. I’d still take the vehicle to the shop for difficult things (brake pipe and brake replacement in the near future).

Had mine from new, coming up to 16 years and 130K. Had all the usual faults, and now budget about £3-400 on annual maintenance and parts. I maintain it. OE tyres last 35K on the front and 42K on the back. Oil pump last year, and and tank saddle this year. Next year will be rear prop (which had a temp repair four years ago) and a precautionary change of the air tank. Still looks like new when cleaned up, and rides as quietly as when it came out of the showroom in 2005. Can't imagine why I would change it.

I’m the same, I’d had a company car or van for 5 years prior to my Disco. I had two substantial repairs, one to an Audi A3 that cost around £5k after hitting a fence post laying in the road (2 new wheels and shocks, bumper and other bits) and the other to a Ford S-Max costing nearly £3.5k after hitting a deer.
I didn’t flinch at either. I’d estimate that I had 20 or so new tyres (all premium costing £150 +), at least 5 full sets of pads and disks, and 4 dealer services on 3 vehicles.
When I quit my job to start my own business it was a big worry for me when I gave all of that up and take that cost on myself but I’m glad I’ve taken the opportunity to learn how to work on the car myself. I’ve enjoyed the whole experience so far!
12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!
