Yesh a good few ideas and something to go on with .
I love the motor but its been a sorce of contention in the house everytimevot so much as bongs on the dash .
Fir me its no an issue I can deal with most issues at the roadside and those I can't I can always manage to get home .
Thr Mrs however panics and doesn't trust it the horse issue is a very dangerous situation .
To down play it is a nonsense cant be many things as dangerous as a mental horse kicking its way into the fast lane of the m62 because a brake light bulb has popped thsts the point I was making.
Thanks for the help guys

If you still get your issues when towing you might need your steering sensor recalibrating. Mine was out very slightly which didnt cause any issues normally but when i had a big trailer on the back i had the same faults you are describing after about 20 mins. I have Gap lld diagnostics and after a bit if research found that my issue coukd be caused by the steering sensor, a quick calibration and i havent had an issue since.

Hi, observation if I may... but first, can I just say I've experienced my D3 dropping to the bump stops on the motorway and I agree it isn't fun. Just getting over to the hard shoulder once you've dropped below the speed of the lorries is an experience! Thing is, given what you said above, in this situation can you see your wife doing any sort of "mechanical" thing to sort the car out?

For example, I'm fitting a basic emergency air suspension inflation system to mine shortly. To use it I'll need to fish my big tyre inflator out the boot, clip it to the battery, pull the fuse on the air suspension computer, then carefully inflate each corner to the right height so that it's sitting level. I know for sure my wife wouldn't even be able to that... and she wouldn't be trying to keep nervous horses calm at the same time. Just saying this sort of "get-you-home" might not be the right choice given your situation. I think the same may apply for anything you try to fit to the car which needs "intervention".

Can I just check... did you say your car goes into "limp-home" mode or just drops to the bump stops? I know on mine it was a suspension compressor issue not ABS so apart from being "on its knees" and a message on the dash telling me not to go over 30mph everything else was working normally. It isn't comfortable driving on the bump stops, but it can get you to the next motorway junction at least.

In fact, if you're a little more intrepid you might be tempted to drive it on the bump stops at more than 30mph. If you were, which of course I wouldn't for safety reasons, you might find there isn't actually any programmed limit to how fast you can go. You might also find it really quite bouncy but not undrivable, and that you could comfortably match the 56mph of the surrounding lorries. You would probably have to avoid potholes like the plague I guess, and sitting on a cushion might be a good idea depending on how far you have to go. In fact I'd say the latter was a must if you still had a 200miles motorway journey ahead of you. Just saying Very Happy

I would really advise against this with a trailer of any sort on the back, the tow hitch will be too low and with a twin axle trailer (which a horse box almost certainly will be) you will have seriously negative nose weight which will be very unstable.

Excellent point, hadn't though about the trailer enough. Apologies for the suggestion.

My experience of the brake light switch causing the suspension to drop to the stops was that I could get the car back up to normal height when turned off and on again (copyright IT Crowd) then pull fuse 26 to stop the height changing and then drive, carefully, back to base to fix the problem.

My experience of that is you don't even need to be that careful. I had a drop to the stops half way through a day's green-laning (water in the compressor connector block we think). We got it to run long enough to pump the suspension up to off road height then pulled the fuse. We completed the rest of the day laning over some quite rough terrain, all worked fine. Very Happy
