The locking tool that fits above the starter motor is more than capable of with standing the forces of undoing the crank bolt. The 3.0ltr bolt is far far tighter than the 2.7.
Although it take time to fit the crank locking pin it's worth it. The crank pulleys are not doweled to the crank when you fit the belt the pulley can move but the crank and cams are held in position with the timing pins. Once the bolt is tightened to the correct torque it will not move. Andrew

Andrew, You are right. The essential thing is the relationship between crankshaft and camshafts rather than the pulley. I have edited my post.
Thanks

While I’m not doubting what your saying, I only quoted what the manual said when I was doing mine, since I didn’t want to take that chance. So, I linked the locking tool for others like myself who didn’t want to take that chance.
Just for clarity when I say ‘pins’ I do mean the cam pins and flywheel pin as well.

Updating I’ve been quote £350 plus vat for front cam belt with pulleys etc
Told the rear I one has never been seen to snap ever. And if it did it’s jot a write off just causes stop of vehicle.
So I think I’ll go for that as it works out probably cheaper with time factor in
Also said the 2005 D3 don’t have the oil pump breakage issue that’s the 06-07 models only

cmb2020 wrote:I was quoted something like £300 for it to be done at a garage. I’ll see what they say about the pump and recommendation vs. This £350 kit plus locking tools etc would be a good £200 more to do myself!
AF seem to be quoting £72 for a cambelt and tensioner, £103 to include idlers and their mounting bolts, (which IMO it is foolhardy not to change). and for £325 (EU4) both front and back belts, tensioners, bolts plus an oil pump, gasket and crankshaft seal. Sealant and a crankshaft bolt would be essential extras. All prices include vat but not any forum discount. Fitting the seal is easiest using special tools and these seem very expensive.
Pumps from 2005 have been known to fail, just less often than 2007 versions, but all pumps wear and become less able to supply a decent pressure at low revs.
Edit £350 plus vat, including idlers and mounting bolts seems a reasonable way for you to go.
If you do opt for a new pump make sure it is a decent, (FoMoCo), quality one (£144 inc vat less forum discount from AF). Search forum for why.
Good luck
John

Sorry was editing.
Yes, if the budget runs to it new FoMoCo oil pump, rear belt and also water pump.
Admittedly the rear belt and water pump could be left for a later date but buying in the belt in the kit, and carrying it with you, seems a good option.
Water pumps do not last forever and yours has done 184k.
Consious of the expense and your time constraints.
I know that some at least of the independents carry oil and water pumps in case they are found to be needed when doing a belts change.

When the rear belt snaps it can damage the wiring loom behind it and that's a very difficult repair.

I’d echo not cutting corners.
I’ve just had a full service with both cambelts, idlers, tensioners, aux belt and oil pump all done at Famous Four - great service and done in a day and a half. That did include all brakes stripped, cleaned etc too.
I’d love to know how many discos that have serious engine problems have had either things missed on their services or cheaper quality parts used. No idea to the answer, just made me wonder...

So to summarise, instead of paying someone 350 to do the front belt and pulleys... I should spend a little more and do the crank bolt, gasket, oil and water pumps and both belts for slightly more
What is the crank bolt and gasket please in this job? Do they fix the oil pump to the crank?
I’ll dig up mikes instructions

The gasket comes with the oil pump but requires the use of a sealant.
The bolt fixes the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft and is the only thing that stops the position of the pulley changing relative to the crankshaft. It is stretched during installation and should not be reused.
