I completely agree with approach Joe. Being up front and honest of the potential costs is definitely the way to go. If people know the risks and the potential cost impacts then they can make an informed choice to either pay the deposit and get the body removed and engine stripped down for you to accurately quote or sell it on.
It's also good that after the strip down there is another decision point whether to carry on with the work or not. It the customer decides not to go for it, they only loose their deposit and you guys get paid for the work you've invested.
Pete, yes I bought the car privately with full service history. I was none the wiser when I bought it. Everything looked fine from a visual inspection. It was just very bad luck unfortunately.Kev

So what’s the worst case senario cost for a 3.0 rebuild then? In parts, labour and vat?
And what’s the full cost of a recon engine from LR? Inc parts, labour and vat?

Very good write up and some praise indeed for Oval. There seems to me to be Option 3 as well, look for a ragged D3 or RRS with a good engine and service history and swap, nominal costs “Bangernomics” at work perhapsD3 2.7 Zermatt silver (not another one)

Pete K no the principle behind my thoughts are that some really scruffy D3’s are around with credible service histories. It must be the same logic with D4’s I have the former (still for sale) and I have seen very scruffy D4’s.........maybe the option 3 is sensible to those who have DIY skills and cannot fund a £4K+ rebuild. “Bangernomics” logic take good bits from cars that would be otherwise scrapped!D3 2.7 Zermatt silver (not another one)

And a good independent would be around the £10k mark for a new short engine including fitting. A recon would be around half that but obviously these figures are completely subject to the state of the failed engine and what is suitable to be reused. Some will be cheaper, some will be more expensive and until the body is lifted, engine removed and damaged analysed (including testing of the injectors etc.) there is no way of knowing what the final bill will be. Sure you can do a pie in the sky estimate, but the variance is huge because of the costs associated with major components such as cranks, blocks etc.Kev

So I am now 1 month on after the rebuild and the car is still running fine!
I pay particular attention to regularly checking the oil level and also waiting for around one minute before driving off after starting the engine to ensure the oil has made it through all of the galleries. I also treat it extra carefully before the engine is fully up to temperature ie. no sudden acceleration etc.
We took a road trip over to France to visit the in-laws over the bank holiday weekend and we got there and back in comfort and style without an issue 8)
