Hi all. Is there a section that ranks jobs by level of hardness? I have had a look but cant see anything.
Im looking to find out haw hard it is to swap a gearbox out for a better one.
Cheers

If I had to guess, I think that would probably rank up towards the top for difficulty..... D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten
2018 FFRR SDV8 Autobiography - Gone to someone with less sense and more time to enjoy it
2016 Toyota Hilux Invincible - Liberating experience

Its a matter of perspective.
Personally i have no problem in removing a gearbox and stripping it down completely, rebuilding and refitting. (in fact had to do it serveral times on a previous car)
Looking at diagrams and other bits on t'internet i would rank it in the lower 1/2 of the difficulty stakes.
Others dont want to risk taking a headlamp out..... If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking .. O

Thanks for the reply... it would just be one auto box out, one back in. No stripping them down. I too would happily split and strip a box but it would take me a fair bit of time. I have access to a pretty well appointed garage. Is it an auto box that you took out a D3?
Cheers

No.
It was an auto from a BMW X5.
But the underneath of that and a D3 isn’t that much different to be honest.
Also did an auto from a BMW525 a fair few years ago.. If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

I believe you need to remove the transfer box first. (so remove both prop shafts)
Remove a cross member.
I wonder if the front cross member can stay in place. I would hope so
And then you can get going on the gearbox. (draining the oil first I assume)
The weight of it is the main issue I guess

Thanks for that Pete... I had a quick look on YouTube for a video but I’m off-shore just now and the crap WiFi doesn’t allow me to stream. I had heard that weight was an issue.
Is anyone aware of a video or a step by step anywhere.
Cheers

Mike Park(DiscoMikey) at MMP Landrover is a top bloke. I’m guessing you live in Kirriemuir. His premises are just behind John Clark BMW off the Kingsway. 👍
