I was under the impression that blanking of the valves could cause strange faults regarding the ECU 'sampling' methods, is this not the case Question

I've never liked these EGR things
I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Mine was at the dealers today for the 75K service, 2 days after I fitted the blanks (2mm mild steel - I figured there was plenty of other mild steel in the exhaust system Wink ) and they called me at about 11am - "hello sir, the technician's found a number of stored intermittent EGR faults, that's £130 per side and they're on back order, would you like to go ahead with that?" Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
"Er, no thanks, both EGRs are blanked off so I don't mind if they work or not thanks" Confused
Long silence....
"OK, well if you want us to take a further look then let us know"
"Of course I will" NOT! Laughing
Just looked at the 'visual inspection' sheet and they kindly offered my an hour of further investigation for £130! Hmmm, maybe not. It goes just nicely now thanks very much, especially after waiting 20K since the last oil change Big Cry
The customer service was spot on though - just a bit annoyed with all the stuff they tried to get me to have done in addition to the service Shocked

Hi,

Just adding my 15 month old D3 to the list of cars with the EGR problem. It has been getting slower and slower over the last month or so, and the engine warning light was on most of the time.

It's been in the dealer for 10 days now, with no date for the arrival of the parts. They claim multiple failures across the country has caused supply shortage and possibly delayed further by failure analysis of this common problem.

I also had a "Transmission Failure" warning stating that limited gears were available, HDC failed plus a few other things. The dealer told me this was an engine sensor reporting moisture in some part of the engine, which caused the car to report a transmission failure.

While it is in I asked the dealer to look at a squealing EPB. They said it may be just wear & tear and not covered by warranty. The car has done 25k motorway miles, so I'm not happy that the handbrake has a problem and they want me to pay.

Here's hoping I get my car back soon.

cheers

simon

I guess you could always just take the butterfly valve out, at least then if an EGR fails, you havnt just got exhaust gas being pumped into the inlet tract, you have still got some clean air, so the loss in power wouldnt be as significant.

Mines running quite happily with just the butterfly valve removed, some 400miles on and the pickup hesitation is definitely reduced over std.
 Cheers

It would be useful to get hold of a 'failed' EGR valve to find out what really goes wrong with them - ie an actuator/solenoid failure, valve sticking, etc. If we can work out what the ECU needs to 'see' when the EGR is connected then it may be possible to just remove the connector, and connect something to fool the ECU into thinking the valve is still connected. That way there would be no need to blank off any pipes as the valve would just remain shut (I assume). It would be useful to know what signals are on each pin of the EGR connector - any D3 tech experts know the answer to this? Foe vehicles out of warranty a plug in solution to the problem could be very apealing Very Happy

AFAIK the EGR valves give position feedback to the ECU so a plug type bypass jumper thingy won't work, it would still generate fault codes as the valve is bound to be in the wrong position some/most of the time.

Best route seems to be to blank off when new/working to avoid them getting contaminated and thereby extend life - but also it won't mess up the motor when they fail....
 Cheers

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
