Goat got up by this sort of accounting shenanigans: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd75nqwdpj7o

Quote:
The complex accounting trick started in March 2017 when a shell company, with no money or assets, called Severn Trent Trimpley was set up as part of the group. Another Severn Trent company called Severn Trent Draycote - which owns the water company - agreed to buy Trimpley for £2.

Trimpley then issued additional shares and Draycote bought them for a staggering £3bn.

No money actually changed hands, however, as Draycote paid Trimpley with a £3bn loan note - effectively an IOU. But, on paper, Trimpley immediately appeared to be worth £3bn because it had the IOU.

Severn Trent Water then acquired 49% of Trimpley - and that investment was valued in the water company's accounts at £1.47bn. A hugely valuable asset appears to have been created for Severn Trent Water out of thin air.

Apparently it's legal. But if they have £1.68bn why do they need customers to stump up millions to pay for infrastructure? Oh, yes, because the company doesn't have the money. But they've paid out huge dividends.

Quote:
Since Trimpley was added to the accounts in 2017, Severn Trent Water Ltd has paid out £1.615bn in dividends.

Profits over the same period were £1.246bn, so Severn Trent Water has paid out £369m more than it made in profit during that period. It looks like cash is being drained from the regulated water company.

What a load of total goat Censored !

We've just had our home insurance quote through from our existing company. Nothing has changed in the last 12 months other than a small claim where son threw the dog a toy which he didn't catch and it bounced off his teeth and hit the tv, breaking the screen. I can't remember the last time we made a claim - it was over 15 years ago if we did!

It's only a 43" tv and I think the total that was paid out by the insurers was under £200 after I'd paid the excess and a premium to get a Sony rather than a cheap Censored one that wasn't like for like.

Anyway the premium has increased by 70% to £999.25! Holy Censored !

We're in a relatively low risk area, it can't flood here as we're at least 12m above sea level (we're quite near Southampton Water), there's no rivers nearby, and we're pretty sheltered and unlikely to suffer any major storm damage.

I know premiums have increased this year but that is a crazy amount.

So begins the shopping round...
 Cheers,

Jez

Ovo energy, hours over 6 days speaking to people in South Africa trying to explain there is no electricity meter in a purchased property.
Telling each person in triplicate but they still ask the same question a few minutes later and ask me to hold after each answer.
It is impossible to speak to anyone in UK.
Eventually get a scheduled appointment for them to come today in a 4 hour window slot - they don't turn up after i've wasted a day in all.
Another hour and a half on the phone and still no further.

I would love to have another supplier but the DNO tell me they were the supplier when meter was removed so have to go with them.
As soon as meter fitted i'm changing supplier.

In the meantime a sly email to a Mr V Putin that Ovo Energy based in Bristol is supplying energy to the Ukrainian power grid. Hopefully a Oreshnik IRBM incoming soon.

I can’t remember when I last put a claim in? 25 years?

I know there’s been times I could have put a claim in, but haven’t simply because you get anxious that the premium will sky rocket, but then what’s the point of insurance if you don’t claim?

Although my excess is £250, I wouldn’t put a claim in for less than £1k as a result. Rolling Eyes

After a bit of shopping around managed to get the same amount of cover for less than I paid this year plus they have a 5 star defaqto rating so hopefully they are ok.

In the course of 3 years, LV has lost both our car insurances and now the house insurance by their massive increase in premiums.
 Cheers,

Jez

SWMBO!

Our son’s partner phoned up last night to say she had received a post graduate training job offer at a financial institution starting at what I think is a high salary, nearly £40k plus benefits.

I said congrats etc. my wife’s reply was a quick congrats, immediately followed up by as they can now afford a mortgage and a subsidised one at that, they can move out of the house we let them have rent free.

A cringe moment. I still don’t know if she was joking or not particularly as she doesn’t do humour. I didn’t like to ask. Shocked

not sure if iv e misread this ..........you think you should continue to subsidise them now there working ????

why would you think that and more to the point why arent they paying you rent even if just a token gesture now ............ you must be mad if ive read this correctly. my eldest had to move back home for work relocation reasons shes on £60K + and the first conversation we had is she would be paying some keep to cover her costs while at home . and no i dont need the money but that wasnt the point

anyone who endlessly gives to there kids is just detatching them from the real world get them out of your rental and get it rented sharpish or get them to buy it off you at FULL market value if ythey like it that much thyell save on legals anyway ......... come on man grow a pair !! (assuming my read is correct )

That’s me told and yes you read it correct. Embarassed

I suppose I let them have it at no cost simply because he is still a student, albeit on his second degree, so the way I looked at it was by letting them have the house (better not tell you I bought it for their use, but not in their name.) I was saving Hall fees of £8-£9k per year. The rental for that house would be £900 per month, so it sort of evens out. I loose out on any interest I’d have made on that money, but the house will increase in value to compensate.

I would and I can afford it. Not because I need the money which I may keep / invest and hand back, but because its sets down a ground rule of paying one's way.

My 23yr niece earns 6 figures as a nanny to someone rich, and famous, but has no commitments. My Brother thinks she is rich, which makes me chuckle................ Even my sister pays half on her car's PCP as she has use of it and probably a large part of the insurance (Niece works typically in the USA but travels with the kids around the world)
