Thanks LR3norway. I finally managed to get the cable ends out of the backing plates. I did as you said and cut open the tube that the cable goes into. I did cut into the white plastic part a bit, but it should be ok to reuse. On one side the white plastic was seized to the tube, I had to use a small screwdriver between the tube and the white plastic and pry it away while spraying penetrating fluid. Took forever to work it free. Used a heat gun to try to get the white plastic a bit more malleable. Also you need to push in the white plastic bit from the inside of the backing plate into the tube, while you pull out on the cable to release it.

Some pictures below. The one with my hand, my thumb is where clip SPV500030 would go. Although on mine it just looked like one big rusted piece.
