Other shoppers think I'm mad. Which has the benefit of keeping them well away from me.

I don't mind a self-serve checkout for a few bits and especially if I'm not in the mood to interact with anyone.

Pro-tip: Next time you use one, look for the volume button at the bottom of the touch screen. Hit Start and then that, set it to mute and scan your shopping in smug bliss whilst those around you get electronically nagged

With regards to Aldi, I think fair-do's you know what you're getting into. My mantra is pretty much "Scan it as fast as you like love, I'm not paying until I've packed it."

They insist on scanning your items so fast you just don't have time to pack them and when you ask them to slow down they say its policy not to pack into bags at the till

I use Aldi and lidel all over Europe for at least 7 months a year and have never had a problem at the cheque out, sounds like a UK problem. :
