Guernsey 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 Landmark LE Auto Santorini BlackDiscovery 4

My x Silver Freelander 2 X landrover mangement (LRE) had 3200 miles on it when purchased.

300 miles later it was making the odd clunking and sometimes loud banging noises, nothing could be found and performance not effected.

1500 miles later severe front wheel wobble, diagnosed front wheel bearings completely gone. This was put down to the incorrect assembly of front hubs when it had had its new gearbox fitted at 3000 miles, which all came as surprise to me.

At 6000 miles huge bang from front end, (loud enough to make you jump out of seat) called LR assist out no fault found, but they did get it to make noise again though not as loud.

300 miles later whole car was shaking and felt completely unsafe to drive.

2 weeks later after various road testing by dealer, Landrover conceded it needed another gearbox.

This time they also replaced the gearbox intercooler which they believed was the reason 2nd gearbox had failed, as it had probably become contaminated with debris from the first gearbox failure.

So by 7000 miles it had its 3rd gearbox Evil or Very Mad Exclamation

Perhaps a worst case scenario but not an option willing to consider again.

Mine also looked immaculate underneath, wheels etc, but was informed that they are all refurbished by Landrover when LRE have finished with them before they are put back on the market for re sale

The FL2's a good car (normally) and you were a serial LR purchaser. What a shame that you had to put up with all of that Sad

Would you consider coming back, just giving the ex LRE nags a wide birth?

Still have a D4 which is what I replaced it with over 2 yrs now and still going strong Thumbs Up

On the plus side, Landrover customer services did get involved and contributed a ยฃ500 to the D4 purchase, as I was somewhat reluctant to keep the Freelander long term Thumbs Up

Is it obvious from the log book if it was an ex-LRE vehicle? Or is there some other way to tell?

I am looking for a 2012 D4, so it won't be very low mileage, one owner, but LRE may have been the first owner.

Good point. All LRE cars are silver or white and are also likely to have a registration beginning with "O".

Beyond that, I'm not sure of a definitive answer.

That is one of my concerns, silver is on my list of preferred colours!

If you can get to see the V5 document, it will have the previous and the previous to that owner. It's highly unlikely that it would have ever been registered to LRE itself (any more than other manufacturers register hire cars, that the lease to hire companies, to the hire companies themselves - better to register them as the manufacturer's "Management" cars to have the best hope of resale). In the case of JLR, they are almost certainly registered as "Jaguar Land Rover Limited, Land Rover Company Vehicle MRC" whatever their original use by the company.

Unfortunately, if it's silver, this makes it impossible to tell between genuine "Management" cars and ex LRE nags Sad

How often (annually) do LRE release they're D4's once it's finished within the LR department?

I fully understand that most users wouldn't touch these ex-LRE as they've seen 'work' however they'll have decent service and maintence.

The biggest giveaway I have found is a fire extinguisher fitted, in the Freelander this was in the boot on right hand side.

Sometimes this will be removed but their will be still be drill holes visible, though normally they remain fitted as they are a right PIA to remove.

A lot of cars are registered to Landrover Management, but only some are used at Experience centres, Colours as stated before and fire extinguisher fitted are the giveaways, as well as low mileage in its 1st yr as they do not cover many on the courses. Otherwise it is pretty difficult to tell Thumbs Up

I cant see the issue to be fair. I understand the comments about third gear box and mud in radiator etc etc but I have a few friends with Disco and RRS and watching their wives drive around town, up kerbs and through pot holes I would take a LRE car over one that has been "looked after" on the school run. I also know of many people (on here to be fair) who have had all the same issues with cars fresh from the showroom of their local dealer.

Shocked land rover driven off road Shocked

If driven well, and regularly serviced, then a LRE experience car will, on average, be no worse than any other private sale, and potentially a lot better. And yes there maybe the odd one that has problems, just as there will be the odd one privately that has problems.....

It's a used car - the standard approach applies: check it out, assess how well used it has been, how well looked after, what price it's at, and make a decision based on those factors. It's much more a case of buying the specific car than any particular historical route to your potential ownership.....

So, yes I would consider one. I ended up buying one from a LR dealer with LR warranty, as it was the best car for that money I could find - I saw another at a dealer with a trashed underneath (dented chassis, rust everywhere, looked like it had lived in the sea), and a load of other good ones too. LRE or not was not a significant part of the equation.

Stopped using Silver in 2014 or thereabouts. Now nearly all are white

My 2012 D4 HSE is ex Land Rover, and the Dealer told me that any "OV" registration indicated that. The log book shows the previous owner as "Land Rover internal fleet, Upper Heyford, Bicester".
The colour is Siberian Silver, but it has so many extras (Fridge, T.V., Vision Assist, Heated Steering wheel etc) I feel certain it was a Management car rather than a L.R.E. Vehicle, but you never know!
There is no sign of a Fire Extinguisher having been fitted. I bought it as a low mileage, (10,000 in a 18 months ) well specced vehicle, and have not been disappointed. Just before the 3 year warranty expired, I booked an early M.O.T., and asked the guy to be really tough. The only thing he could find was a weeping Power Steering rack, which I insisted got changed by the dealer before the 3 year warranty expired.
However, it is just beginning to show some intermittent faults (Sat Nav sometimes not working and sometimes the Reversing Camera not working) but I don't think those faults are the result of excessive off reading. I purchased the expensive Land Rover extended warranty, so it's about to go back to the Dealer for those faults to be repaired.
So, provided you buy at a sensible price, don't be frightened about buying an ex Land Rover Disco!
