Tempted to try this...... leaving it in drive, apply EPB and foot off brake ..... but is it safe....? does it not try to creep forward - does it really know the car has stopped? 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

here's a fun one - got bogged down on Houndkirk Moor a few years back - grounded out after dropping the front end over a large mud step - tried to reverse, no luck - and jumped out with the car still in reverse but going nowhere to see how badly stuck I was
panicked somewhat to find myself stood between my car in reverse with noone in the drivers seat and Rob Gilmorrs D3 behind me... Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Stick it in park or neutral. Too easy to press the accelerator when you get distracted.
If you get a minor shunt from behind whilst in P the parking pawl will shear. Things can get really expensive from that point.

There's a lot of talk here about annoying the person behind with brake lights.
Can't say I've ever been annoyed by someone's brake lights or is it just a disco thing ?!Velar MY18 D180 S Narvik

I imagine it's different if you're sitting in an ordinary car behind a Discovery as the lights would be at eye level.Darren

Try it, the epb releases pretty quick so theres no delay when pulling off, plus as I understand it from a legal/solicitors point of view if you are rear ended and you have handbrake on you are in the clear should you whack the car in front, ie all the costs go against the driver who hits you.
Possibly doesnt apply to the zf box but I can remember a few years ago reading of some bmws having issues because their owners stuck them in N when at the lights etc, something wore in the box requiring a full rebuild, think bmw use zf boxes nowadays so maybe applicable?
My wife has driven autos mainly mercs and now audis for many years, she has never selected N in all that time.

It's clearly different for 8 speed D4's, but the D3 handbook specifically says:
Quote:
DO NOT allow the vehicle to remain
stationary for any length of time with a
drive gear selected and the engine running
(always select ’P’ or ’N’ if the engine is to
idle for a prolonged period).

I would wager a fair chunk of money that 99 percent of auto drivers never select N in normal traffic, maybe 95 percent in real heavy snarl ups and thats only becasue their leg is aching from holding the brake on
Ps what page in the manual is your ref to?
