Stick it in park or neutral. Too easy to press the accelerator when you get distracted.

First auto I had - an Audi A4 15 years ago - I religiously put it into neutral if the wait was likely to be more than a few seconds. Just after it ran out of warranty (as is always the case ) the gearbox control lever failed. I was told that it was because I'd been switching between drive and neutral too much ! To be fair, Audi did pay for the replacement in the end after a few histrionics

I tend to leave it in gear because the chances are I'll have forgotten I had put it in neutral and when I go to pull away I'd roll into the car behind Discovery 4 HSE

I,ve been led to believe that with hot brakes and holding them on could cause warped discs due to discs cooling unevenly. Also stop lights bug the guy or gal behind.
Wee bit of courtesy please.

Advised by (Honda) garage not to leave foot on brake pedal once stopped. Highway Code states out if gear and handbrake on when at traffic signals

Leave in D if only waiting very short period and Neutral with EPB on if longer. Never select P if waiting at traffic lights as to easy to go into reverse.D3 TDV6 S MY2005

Always N and electric brake. If in D and someone hits you from behind, you'll be the one rolling forward, either into the car in front or traffic.
A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a junction, in N and leccy brake on. I got rear-ended. I only knew because of the bang. No damage to Disco but other car's front was damaged and it had bounced back about 3 feet (Disco didn't move).2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

Save blinding those behind, and making for a more relaxing drive by leaving it in D and applying the EPB. Other than pulling my boat out on steep slipways that's the only time I use the EPB.Previous cars

foot on brake and then put in neutral if any kind of delay
never used the EPB ever (unless parked on a slope) a stupid design which solves a problem that does not exist (pointless technology)
never had an issue with EPB or auto box in 10 years
like many the auto pivot lever underneath did seize up and needed replacing (done by me)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I always leave it in D with EPB on and foot off brake - saves disc hot spots and doesn't annoy the person behind - then when lights change just drive away.
I only use N with EPB if I am going to be there a while.

I notice on my 8speed, as I pull up to a halt in D, after about a second the revs jump up ever so slightly. When I release the foot brake, they dip slightly before the car moves. So I agree with Robbie that the TC knows you have stopped with D, and disconnects.
