Hmmm...To be or not to be sensible

While we are seriously considering a D4 as our next car with a child on the way, we also need to consider some possibly more economical options as apparently children are expensive (something my father keeps reminding me). Our car use is both regular long distances (to France and Italy) and short supermarket trips, mild off roading from Oct-end Jan and trips in the snow in Italy. Big boot, comfortable seats especially for me (a tall driver) and of course safety. We have narrowed the cars down to the following and I wondered what your views were on them and how they might compare to the car I've coveted since it came out in 2009 (the D4).

A6 Allroad
Discovery Sport
Volvo XC70
Or keeping the Freelander 2

I'd so like any responses to say all rubbish except for the Discovery 4 but trying to be sensible!

Genuinely, with a family on the way, keep with the Disco.

By the time you've got a buggy, nappy bag, wifes handbag and all your shopping in the boot of any of the others you'll have to be ramming it in to keep the tailgate shut.

Even my wife admits there's no way we could go for any other car with the amount of cr*p she likes to try and shove in the boot once we've left the shops.

Agree with the last sentiment...

I've got an A6 Avant so same boot as the A6 Allroad you are considering - once we put the pram and nappy bag, wellies, coats, etc. in there isn't much space for anything else. Admittedly we have two young kids but it wasn't much better with just one! If we go anywhere as a family, it's in the wife's D3!

Sadly our D3 blew its engine during the Easter weekend this year meaning our planned trip to CenterParcs cost me a fortune as I had to buy roof bars and a roofbox for the A6 else there was no way we were getting all of the stuff we need there.

I bought a full height dog guard for our D3 so I can stack stuff up to the top and not worry about it coming into the cabin and it works a treat.

Can't comment on the size of the other options bus suspect the XC70 might be the only one that comes half close.
 Cheers,

Gareth

Can't comment on others as never driven one but I've had a D3/4 for nearly 11 years now (when I first got the D3 folk used to come up to me at petrol stations to look at it)

Practicality? - My kids are not kids anymore but going away on holiday with 2 kids, 2 adults + gear never a problem ever

Safety? – Beyond any doubt

Comfort? – I drove from Uxbridge to Manchester last night – 192 miles, nonstop, fast and stop / start motorway – got out of D4, at home – fresh as a daisy

Snow? – If we get any – D3 in 2009 and D4 in 2010 – queens of the neighbourhood, shrugs its shoulders at bad weather in general (and the AC is COOL)

Off-Roading? – can’t personally comment apart from LRE days but all the folk on here that do can’t be wrong

Reliability? – Like anything that’s relatively complex – needs looking after but I’m sure no more than similar spec cars

Decision? – up to you, but fact that you are on here means your heart is probably there already (I’ve never bought a car with my head)

Thank you for your responses. My heart of course says Discovery. But with the specs, mileage and age of the Disco we would like, it does end up at £55k. The Allroad would be £45k and the XC70 £35k. Is the D4 really worth an extra £20k? And then the running costs.

What you "want" and "need" are two different things.

I would suggest that spending around £25k-£30k will get you a very nice D4 Thumbs Up

I've paid less than that for a brand new D4 HSE Lux with fixed towbar, I presume you haven't spec'd a newer or lower milage one than that, I didn't tick any other options so either you are looking at list price or you're going wild with other options.

Wow, really? That's v interesting to know. I appear to have been looking for a D4 in the "I saw you coming a mile away" shop.

Unnecessary quote removed

I went from a Freelie 2 to a Disco 4 mainly because of the lack of boot space in the Freelie - very happy with it otherwise.

I love my D4, brilliant car. Only thing against it really is the fuel consumption (about 5mph worse than the FL2) and the fact that it's a complex car and so older models have high maintenance costs.

The DS has more boot space than the FL2 and, now, a better engine. But I don't hear too many people raving over it.

The boot space on all the others is smaller than the d4.

55k gets you a new HSE.... 30 to 40 gets you one with reasonable mileage and only a few years old.

Tow bar, electrics, roof box etc can all be added later and for considerably less cost than at the dealers

Of those listed, only the XC90 comes close to the D4, but still not close enough to make me buy one.

I've owned mine from new for nearly 11 years. In that time i've also had new Merc E class and 5 series estates a Nissan Quashqi and an Audi A6 Avant. I've sold them all at stupid losses and kept my old bus becuase it is so good. Yes I could have bought a D4 but my old bus does everything a D4 does so I'm waiting for the new D5 and Tesla Project X before thinking of retireing her. Here's the first 10 years:
