I was in a similar position to you earlier in the year looking for the right family car. I'd always wanted the D4 but was really pushing the budget to get one. Thought about the DS, some large estates like the A6 and 5 series, even a few MPV's but kept coming back to the Disco.

Fast forward and after a few months of owning mine, I honestly wouldn't swap it for anything else. It is the ultimate family car - quick (if you're not worried about mpg), huge, great driving position, extremely smooth and comfortable, etc etc. So doubt this has helped and I guess you already knew all of this but I say go for it if your budget allows. Thumbs Up

Read with great interest..

what others on heres needs, ideas & opinions are..
The FL2 is a great vehicle...

The Disco 3/4 is a whole heap better....in my humble opinion..... AWESOME
so good in fact they will replace it with a vehicle most of us Disco 3/4 equipped won't be able to afford.

Like many others I'm hanging on to mine...
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Just come from an FL2 to a 2 year old D4 HSE with 25,000 miles and the difference in boot space is incredible.

Paid just over £35k which included 2 years warranty, assistance and MOT warranty so you don't have to pay a fortune to get your car of choice with peace of mind for a few years.

Fuel consumption isn't a concern as I don't do a huge annual mileage but love the smoothness and comfort not forgeting the safety factor.

Go on you know you want to.

It's obvious that on a Disco forum, people's answers will favour the Disco.

But there is a reason for that. It's hard to see an area where the Disco can be beaten on anything given your choices. The price for that is that running costs are a bit higher with more fuel and higher servicing costs. Not significantly higher though. But think of that as a premium for having a safer, roomier and classier car!

paid ~£30k for a D4 HSE with 29k miles on, so they are around - LR dealer too - great family car, and the 7 seats means when kids have friends they can all travel too - space for holidays, shopping, etc. Nice to drive- not a sports car or fast estate, but relaxed and fine when pressing on if you know how to maintain speed.

Changed from an S-Max which is another good option, with plenty of space and drivability, but the D4 is much better.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and useful comments. Very much appreciated and it certainly is swaying us in the direction of the D4.

Until I saw the "baby changing mat"...Our decision has been made.

Thanks again.

I may be late to the party but I've two kids under 2. I had an A4 Avant and once the double buggy was in nothing else would go in the boot. I've just packed for our Xmas jaunt and filled the disco boot (should have got a transit... ). Obviously people with more kids travel in smaller cars but for convenience the D4 is awesome as well as ticking many other boxes.

To echo others - the baby changing mat is amazing Smile

The boot is big enough that our 2.5year old son can stand inside it whilst our 11month old daughter is having her nappy done on the lower tailgate, and we're all covered from lots of the weather by the open upper tailgate.

With sidesteps, my son can easily climb up into the back of the D3 whereas I have to lift him into the back of the A6.

It may not be the main selling point for many owners but it really is a useful family vehicle. Especially as there are loads of spaces to store "stuff" like spare nappies, wipes, bags, snacks, drinks, etc.

Best family feature for me is the height - we regularly visit Knowsley Safari park and with the suspension in off-road, we can see over most other cars to see all of the animals without having to queue behind everyone else. The kids love it!
 Cheers,

Gareth

The Discovery is the ultimate family car, nothing does it better.

One weekend it's a van disposing rubbish at the tip, the next it's a family bus.

The A6 AllRoad, Merc GLE and XC70 were on my list of possibles, I drove all, but still went for the D4. I had all on an extended test through our fleet team. Interesting I couldn't get comfy in the A6 and returned it to the dealer after 2 hours into a 3 day loan. The XC70 felt dated, but was comfy. The Merc was pretty good, and felt modern and good to drive.

My heart said the Merc was the one to go for, but my heart was with the D4.

D4 HSE Luxury being collected on Wednesday.

Thank you for the very useful comments. It's now between the XC70 and the D4. So may the best car (the Disco) win. Very Happy

when we tried the XC range, the suspension was truly awful - rolling round bends, awful body control - I hope they've improved it, and think they must have as so many people rate them, but the one we tried was so bad I asked the dealer if it was faulty - he said no.....

D4 every time. More room, too.

I've heard that. Am amazed by how well the Disco corners, considering its size and height while the Volvo pitches and rolls like a ship.

Which seats did you prefer?

can't say I noticed anything about the XC seats, so they were ok but not exceptional I guess. Disco seats are much better in the HSE than the XS, which was the main reason we went for a slight older HSE.

We are moving ever closer to a Discovery 4. Mrs is onboard and we have narrowed down a couple to choose from. What should we be listening out for, checking, when testing these vehicles? For info we are looking at 2 year old 17k mile cars.

Huge thanks.
