So what started off as the harmless purchase of a Tuff Trek roof tent and awning from Steve73 has turned into something a smidgen more complicated
I will be collecting a Sankey narrow track in about ten days time and it's my intention to create a basic but useable camping trailer. Nothing too fancy, just a box on wheels with the RT mounted on top at the same height as it currently is on the D4. Would like the trailer to be fully-enclosed and featuring various cubbies for cooking, cooling ( ), camping, etc.
I don't have any plans/drawings as yet as I'm waiting to collect the trailer, but my first (of many no doubt) questions are about creating a framework for the RT and cubbies. I have no experience of, or kit for, welding and wondered if anyone on the forum has used a framework that has been riveted or similar? Will it be strong enough for my needs? Is it likely become loose over time?
A few pics of the Sankey in it's current guise:

I too used a narrow track and it has evolved from there. Personally having done this I would weld a frame up. It is also a useful skil to learn
Get your self a small welder and have a go. I used 2mm box section 25mmx25mm and it is plenty strong enough. I dont see why you possibly could not bolt something together rather than weld but IMO I would weld.
If you are looking to build just a top to go on the orginal tub then have a look at Iggy's & Beanie's builds. They both have wide tracks but they have built just the top sections as they both want the trailer to be used for other things (dual purpose)
There is plenty of help on here though for when you get building There are also alot of other builds especially Wiggs's absolutly amazing build, and not forgetting RLDs live in pod
But most importantly enjoy doing it 07 Java Black TD V6 D3, EGRs Blanked, Tow bar, Full dog guard & divider, LED Spots , DRLs, GG ATs, RLD Sump guard, RLD Spare Wheel Protector, D4 LED Rear Lights, Limo tints on boot and Midnight tint on rear windows, Kenwood screen with Garmin nav, Rear cameras, D4 Steering wheel with flappy paddles, T-max split charge system, Tree sliders, Prospeed roof rack & Ladder, Alisport fast road inter cooler,

Thanks Sailorboi. Iggy pointed me in the direction of your build thread as the Sankey is still on a NATO hitch and I may well consider a standard ball version. He's also been very accommodating and I'm meeting him on Monday next, so the help is already on hand and coming in.
I do like the idea of something with a modular unit for the top
If I'm going to weld, better get myself off to Machine Mart or somewhere then and get checking out YouTube...what could possibly go wrong, hey!!!! Nice buy Simon.
I've got a Mig welder that spends most of its life doing not very much if you wanted borrow it for the rebuild. I'm not in a rush for it back.

Somebody on here (I can't remember who ) needs to tell you one day about his first Welding attempt on his frame..........Got it looking good, bolted it to the trailer, placed roof tent on top of frame as he was a little excited, wheeled trailer out of garage, opened out the roof tent......climed up the ladder into the roof tent..... Trailer began to tip (Somebody had forgotten to put the trailer legs down)......twinging noises could then be heard as all of his welds snapped under the force....trailer tipped completely up into the air,......tent by now no longer had a frame to sit on.....I was...I mean this person was still in tent.....tent and this person fell 6 feet to the floor.......person climbed out of tent to see frame lying in pieces around him and trailer now 20 feet along the drive
No idea who is was mind
So important lesson, make sure you melt the weld into the steel...not as I, I mean this person originally did on his first frame......my current frame is super welded Iggy/Ieuan

I seem to remember seeing your post about that, Iggy. That sort of event has my name written all over it too
Bodsy, that would be perfect. Hoping to pop up to see my Sis soon so could meet up then? On a slightly different note, have you seen her to talk her out of the Renegade?Front Runner Rack, OEM Ladder & RAI, Tuff-Trek Foxwing, B'rakhah Ingonyama Expedition Trailer, RLD's Spare Wheel Protector, Bodsy's Bars, Empty Pockets! Holy crap! To quote.... "design that gives the Jeep® Renegade a style all of its own."
They're not wrong there!!!
Wasn't aware that was what she meant by 'a smaller cheap 4x4!'
It's pretty.......ugly..... :vomit:
Right! Some serious talking to needs to happen!!
As for the welding, I'll give you a lesson on how to use it. The last person to borrow it, wanted to be manly and not take the welding lesson....... Surprisingly enough when he sat on the frame he welded, it collapsed. I don't think he'd managed to penetrate any metal at all......
Always had a thing for Jeeps, not that the Renegade is anything like a Jeep.

If you have no welding experience then I would stick to something easier ... You wouldn't want half a trailer comming apart on the motorway !G4 Gone ...but not forgotten
^^^ Thanks for the build thread, Wiggs. The welding thing is kind of how I feel but wasn't sure how or even if bolting/riveting would work.
