Re getting BT to fit a radiator, anyone had BT fit one? I thought I saw that somewhere but can't find any reference for the life of me.

My old box sat around 80 degrees, would go as high as 90 when the TC was unlocked
With the new box, the highest I have seen is 65.
At over 100 degrees, the oil degrades extremely quickly, and long term wear/damage will occur. It maybe is time for a gearbox rebuild...My D3 Build Thread

Just been looking back at some screen dumps I did from the IID, I've been getting oil & transmission temp mixed up. Highest engine oil temp I've seen is 104c crawling up long 1 in 3 track, the transmission temp got up to low 90s. Coolant was also low 90s.
Still high though.
Will see if I can pull up the pdf of the data log.
Screen print was the best I could do, transmission temp is the bile green trace. This was at the top of the hill.

Would explain the hot oil temp, assuming that 104c is hot. I've not really got a handle on what the normal range is. Plus that heat is being transferred to the radiator so prob not helping oil temp and coolant temp.
Auto box oil should, for maximum life, stay between 75 and 95° C. It's permissable to run them up to around 135° C for short periods, like climbing steep hills.

if you put the BMW pan on, then there will be less fluid in there overall, so possibly wont cool as much as there is less oil, so the same oil is in use more, heating it up more. Possibly. Not sure if it makes any difference overall as many people have it. But if theyre taking everything else off, then may as well change the filter anyway.
TC is part of the gearbox oil system, so effectively you will already be changing a lot of the oil. If theyre changing the Autobox filter as well, then even more so.
Not sure what my hottest temp is on the oil. The oil cooler is built into the side of the radiator. Could be worth a rad change if you've never had it done. Consider changing the intercooler as well as it is easier to take out at the same time as the rad. Mine had a bout 2KG of mud in the fins over the years. I doubt that yours will be any different!
Have you got an exact figure how much less if any the metal sump holds compared to the oe plastic one?
Mines been metal for over 2years and I've not noticed anything detrimental. Though I wouldn't go out of my way to fit one - the filter in mine was a clean as a clean thing when it came out.Mark.

If the existing one is fine I'll just stick with that then. Save a few pennies.

That had been in for 50K miles, and 40k of them was with known issues. Anything stuck to that magnet would have passed through the filter anyway, as it's not a "filter"
I do have pictures someplace of a filter I cut open. You could almost see daylight through it My D3 Build Thread
