I liked the idea of the heated steering wheel, was on the list of the upgrades.

So a low call item on a vehicle no longer made that probably had an 'All time buy' run at some point so limited lifetime stock available.
Or a review of prices and some have gone up and some have gone down depending on costs associated to keep them in production
Or just an opportunity to fleece the poor unsuspecting punter "because they can"
You choose which one it falls into and vote accordingly with your wallet whether that be with JLR brand or another one. They all do these sorts of things and supply and demand is a driver.
I'm guessing you won't need another one for the life of the vehicle if you buy this one now so cost per annum actually won't be so bad once you work it out - know that doesn't help the expenditure anger now though
If it's being replaced beacuse the leather has worn, etc. you considered getting it re-trimmed - someone on here did that recently

It's mainly for this reason I've been considering ditching the brand for something else.
There comes a point in a vehicle's life (IMO) where it's no longer economically viable to keep throwing new parts at it. Increasing the costs of said parts only compounds this issue.
I only drive an S manual. It does the job for me. It's probably worth £7k, if that, having covered 115k miles over the last 7.5 years. It's getting to the age where it's probably going to need another £1k spending on it at some point.
Expected components to be replaced in the next few years on a 7.5 year old D3:
EAS Compressor £500
Air tank £100
Sump £100
Front upper arms/bolts £100
Steering rack £300
Struts x 4 £700
Seat belts (frayed WTF?) x 2 £250
Door latches x 2 £250
Add that lot up and you've got £2500 worth of parts alone (without labour). Not counting regular service items/tyres here. These are cheap when bought through the correct channels (AF).
Plus the unexpected engine/front/rear diff failure here and there.
Can I justify spending almost 40% of the value of the car on parts alone just to keep it on the road when I could buy something else that costs me £30 (or £250) a year in RFL and is twice as economical on fuel? How long before the cost of the D3 parts is returned in fuel and RFL on a cheaper to run vehicle?
Sure, I love the car. It's the best family car we've ever owned. It suits us perfectly. Would I upgrade to a D4? Probably not. It's still £500 a year in RFL and is marginally less economical than my D3 (auto v manual). Would I buy a Freelander? Nope. Would I buy a Disco Sport? Probably not.
Which leaves me looking elsewhere for suitable transport for my family. There is a massive void to be filled by all car manufacturers here. The only company who seem to have come close so far are Mitsubishi with their Outlander PHEV. I'm not sure I would buy one, though.

I had a dekko at the PHEV and it' s an ugly looking motor (IMHO). Then I read a couple of reviews on its capabilities with hybrid gear and it didn't press the buttons for me. Each to his own but I don't think that it is competition for LR.
Bill Wright?
PS Stop/Star version of the D4 RFL is about half of previous D4'sNever take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
