Yes, the Outlander PHEV is an ugly car and I doubt I will be buying one. My point was more around the fact that more car manufacturers need to start building cars that are designed for families and utilise renewable energy.
The 2014MY D4 RFL is half that of the earlier models. It still struggles to attain 28mpg which, in 2014, is not much of an improvement over the Land Rovers of 50 years ago. They also start at £42000 for a model that is less equipped than my old bus. Still, at least they've put cruise control on the SE now.
Just trying to be less deluded - and more of a realist - than some of the others on here.

I understand your frustration but in reality nearly 30 mpg for a vehicle that weighs 3 tonnes approx ( 3 and a quarter tonnes for my Metropolis) and has the aerodynamics of a House is pretty good I'd say and certainly Landies from 50 years ago didn't have the performance you have now, nor the comfort and adaptability, nor indeed the weight.
As for the running costs, again big heavy vehicle, and yours is 8 years old. I hear a lot of people bemoaning parts failure when I would consider much of what they are replacing to simply be ongoing maintenance, though some parts I would agree should have longer service life, but that is the part some people overlook, service life ! There do seem to be a few parts that they are quite frankly taking the on granted, and the inability to gets some spare parts was also pretty poor.
The other thing I would add is that there are few other vehicles that will do everything that your Discovery does or do it as competently. I suspect if you go to any forum for A.N. Other brand you'll find similar comments about them for various faults. All in all, do you spend a bit and have a vehicle with a known history that should then be good for another period of time or do you take a gamble on a different one ........?
End of the day it a decision only you can make so best of luck with it

now it makes even more sense to get a D4 heated wheel into your D3 with the help of BBS small miracles...
Er no, I've got one fitted, full RRS heated and flappy, sorry but it's way more expensive than fitting a D3 using existing switches etc.Altox GSM FBH controller thread

+1 its not a cheap option, but shear magic, particularly as it gets colder. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I thought that you had to be rufty-tufty to have a D3/D4. Put a pair of gloves on to keep your little pinkies warm!

Heated wheel is the best mod I've done after the cooler cubby box. After clearing snow and deicing you're hands are like blocks of ice, even with gloves on and can take a long time to put heat into them? I usually resorted to sitting on one hand at a time with the heated seat on. With the heated wheel fingies were warmed up in minutes, boy did it smart but they were warm. Mind you we are talking about temps between -10c and -20c, a might nippy.
Cue gratuitous snow pic, to show those down sauff what proper snow looks like.

How much for a bolt?
I was going to go in and price up the rear hub bushes on monday as well..
I liked the idea of the heated steering wheel, was on the list of the upgrades.
Upper knuckle 13mm bolt is only a few quid and the M13 nut is a tenner
Lower 16mm bolt only about 3 quid and M16 nut a few quid.
Must be gold somewhere in that M13 nut to be at that priceD3 TDV6 S MY2005

That from a main dealer?
You get prices for the rear hub bushes as mine are also squeaking so need to get them changed.

Forget main dealer for the knuckle bushes as they are far too expensive. I got top and bottom bushes for both sides for about 70 quid from Britishparts. Bolts I got from Morrisons LR in Stirling less 15% discount but will need to bite the bullet and buy the expensive M13 nuts.
Just got to arrange for Mikey now to fit them as the sqeak is doing my head in, but still passed its MOT on Wednesday still with the suspension squeaking.D3 TDV6 S MY2005
