Potential D3 HSE purchase - opinions please

Hello everyone

I've been searching for a D3/D4 for a while now and lurking here for some time trying to absorb as much as I can. Now things are starting to get serious and I viewed an 80k miles 2009 D3 HSE yesterday at New Barn Cars in Cheltenham (Prestbury) which is up for £18k. It's a two-owner car - first was Land Rover / Paragon for about a year and then it was registered to an estate in Marlborough. Full service history mainly with T H White in Swindon.

It looks pretty clean but it's clearly been used off-road or more likely on farm tracks on the estate as it had a distinct 'eau de dog'. There's a bit of mud underneath that hasn't come off with the power-washer but, as I say, it looks pretty clean. The one area I noticed that was far from clean was behind the rear auxiliary covers that hide toolkit / fuses - it was very dusty in there. A very distinct yellowy brown dust.

Other things I spotted were a dodgy nearside bonnet catch (dropped the bonnet a couple of times and only the offside catch latched). Typical wear to the drivers door seal. And the driver's window is fine when up but is clearly loose when wound down judging by the rattle when closing the door.

I did a quick check on EPB (sounded okay), suspension height and terrain settings and saw no warning lights on the dash. Should I also have checked the 4x4 info screen?

1/ Has anyone had any dealings with New Barn Cars? I can find no mention of them when I search the forum but they specialise in Discos.
2/ Is the muck behind the aux panels fairly typical / nothing to worry about / a sign of a hard life Smile
3/ Anything to be concerned about with the bonnet / window or should be fairly straightforward?
4/ Anything else I should watch out for?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi Mike,

1) No dealings with NBC.
2) Muck behind cubby panels is not typical (at least not on mine which spends its days ploughing up and down the motorways of the south). My cubby holes are very clean but I only ever drive on made roads. I suspect it is as a result of driving on unmade farm/estate tracks. There are air vents behind the rear light clusters and I should imagine the dust has got in through there.
3) Bonnet latch is quite cheap (about a tenner, I think). Window, not sure but mine also rattles a bit when closing the door when down.
4) Being a 2009MY, you will be wanting to change the oil pump when you do the belts (if not before). Plenty on here about timing belt tensioners and oil pumps.

Thanks Steve. I compared the drivers door with passenger closing with window down and there was a big difference - I initially thought it was something in the door pocket like a CD case rattling back and forth but it must be the window mechanism.

I've read a lot about belts and oil pump casings on here and thought it was primarily 07 / 08 model years affected. The VIN of this vehicle puts it in the LR007798 part no range. I'm not sure there have been any failures reported for this one? That said it's not a big issue as the cam belts will need doing soon anyway so its not a big incremental cost - more of an issue if they've already been done without the casing. Then you have a quandary Sad.

I never thought it also before. Nice to know that they really have a big difference.

I know it's not at all technically sound but I'm getting bad vibes. I think the car has had a hard life. Vibes good or bad have served me well in the past. Shame I cannot connect myself to it - I would give you a reading Shocked
sorry it's not the best answer.

1. No
2. Definitely not normal, I'd suggest signs of it being used for what it was intended for
3. My 2009 is tight as a button - none of the above at all so I'd be wary unless it has a whole host of receipts and supporting evidence of it being a looked after car... a bit of grubbiness due to working is one thing, not being properly maintained is another and just leaves the next owner with an expensive legacy.

Above said 18k is a fair few grand cheaper for a last of the D3 HSE so on the basis you've not stretched yourself to get in the car you've the opportunity to get it up to scratch.

I'd strong recommend getting one of the guys on here that run their own independent shops to spend some time on the car - at least get the AF fluid changed, lower arms and bushes etc., checked and they can probably help with the window, etc., too whilst there. IF there has been any lack of maintenance there is a good chance they will spot the signs and advise you appropriately on what to do and what order to do it in.

All the best, I'm sure it'll all come good and you'll enjoy the ownership - just resist the temptation of all the mods on here until you know you've got the car tip top Thumbs Up
