Brake recall - make sure you check

Just had the master cylinder, vacuum pump, brake booster and all vacuum pipe work replaced all paid for by Landrover on a 2006 car which is impressive (although it is a major safety issue)

Original recall was done in 2011 but recently had gurgling noise and hard brake pedal.

I would advise checking even if you have had the recall done as I think it is the vacuum pump which is faulty as it was redesigned on later models and it's not easy to replace so I LR aren't going to do it unnecessarily

Is it simply a case of contacting a LR dealer with the vin number ?

How can you check if the work has been done? Main dealer says they can't work on my car because it's LPG and their insurance doesn't cover it. Shocked Didn't press the issue 3 years ago as I prefer independents for a number of reasons.

This is known as Recall Action P017. The exact details of it are here:

http://media.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/u...7v6_UK.pdf

Al, you would know if it had been done as there would be a Heath-Robinson arrangement of black pipework emerging from the tray where all your LPG paraphernalia is housed. Now you mention it, I don't remember seeing it.

I don't think this applies to a V8 but would recommend you check with LR. It will present them with an interesting dilemma, if nothing else:

A legal obligation to rectify a critical manufacturing defect on a car they cannot touch due to their insurance. Laughing Thumbs Up

I see what is written however:

Only applies to diesel because the braking system is different enough?

or...

Only applies to diesel because the numbers are different and the bean counters don't deem the risk to be significant?

It would not apply to a petrol engine because vacuum is created in the inlet manifold, and this is used for brake servo assistance, so a vacuum pump is not required as on a Diesel engine.

I had this with mine - in for Recall, pipework changed, servo 'checked and proved okay'.

Unfortunately, this was not the case!!! The servo was full of oil. This showed itself by the gurgling you describe (most niticeable with the car pointing downhill), and a hard pedal when I tried an emergency stop (it was fine under normal braking).

One 'discussion' with the Dealer later, and they took the car back in and replaced the servo ...

SWMBO has been whining that there was a problem with the brakes and that they are harder to push. I told her she was imagining it. I suggested that as the discs and pads needed replacing, that the problem was with worn parts.

In parallel, I have been hearing a gurgling noise behind the dash on start up. I thought it was the heater matrix, so topped up coolant. Was planning to research on here for week, but only remembered today and now that I put wifes comments and gurgling sound together, I think i have found the problem.

Just spoke to my mate in LF Ireland who suggested I remove the servo pipe, use a cable tie as a dipstick and if there is oil in it, get it into LR.

my biggest problem now is the lecture i will get from "herself" as to how she was right and I was wrong... Big Cry

Another check is to pull the plastic vacuum pipe apart on the joint where it passes over the master cylinder to see if there is oil in the pipe.

So I have had the recall done on my 06 D3 (have the Heath Robinson contraption in situ) but....

As I have the body off I wanted to check the vacuum pump and lines for oil so disconnected them from the pump itself and sure enough there is black oil in the vacuum pump exit ports. There is also oil (did the cable tie dip test up the tube) in the pipe where it joins into the servo and also the brake fluid in the master cylinder looks distinctly black and contaminated.

This makes me think that when the recall was done they (whomever the dealer was - I won't name them) just replaced the pipes with the new non return valve and didn't check the servo or replace the vacuum pump itself.

So obviously I cannot take the car back to LR (as its in bits) but wondered whether I could get a concession on the replacement bits and then fit myself.

Just wondered what you chaps think?

By heath robinson pipe work, do you mean the collection of black nylon pipes back side of the engine bay driver side?

I have had two D3's done and each time the pipework, servo and master cylinder were changed.
