Just to add removing the alternator requires removal of the vicious fan having the correct tools are vital as the coupling is normally very tight and a left hand thread, you need to lock the pulley as you attempt to shock the coupling loose , if you use a cam locking tool with predrilled holes it makes life a lot easier, also take care that the fan blades are brittle and will snap if you miss with your hammer!! Don't forget to double check parisitic current draw after fitting the new alternator and battery.

Good luck!!

Paul

I learnt 3 things today...

1) People are awesome - less than 20 hours after my family was stranded on the roadside the D3 is back to 100%, because of you guys in this forum.
Massive thanks to Steve (aka BoringOldGit) from www.advancedfactors.co.uk who not only provided the parts at the best price I could find but also met me half way (an hours drive for Steve) first thing this morning so I could crack on with the repair. Thanks Steve Bow down Thumbs Up And huge thanks to the people who put the guides together. Saved me a small fortune compared to parts and labour at a dealer and even an indie. £260 all in plus a bit for fuel to meet Steve.

2) I really need a garage!!!! I am soaked to the skin but happy cause the car is fixed

If you're reading this because you need to replace your alternator you need this kit:

http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/00d3a-den...3722-p.asp
and these guides:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic54774-15.html
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/69060-...ement.html

I copied the best of both guides to a word doc with the photos and printed it.

3) How to change a D3 Alternator Thumbs Up

Out of interest - is the alternator belt also the timing belt?

Thanks again, Dan.

Dan

It was a pleasure to assist in your time of need.

Timing belts are behind the plastic covers front and rear of the engine - Main at the front, pump belt at the back, they need changing at 105,000 mile or 7 years.

Link for your next project then...

Right.... As I've started....

I noticed today there seems to be vapour/steam? escaping tiny holes in the pre-heater. Never noticed before and it kind of looks like there are holes on the seams to allow it escape?

Should I be concerned?

Just got to the end of the thread haha.

I'm just going down this path. Different fault in theory but all points back to the alternator. My order will be going into Steve next week along with discs, pads and a couple of other bits.

Only able to do things myself because of the forum and the help and support of others here Bow down

Glad you managed to get yourself sorted Dan Thumbs Up Great sense of achievement being able to do stuff yourself Very Happy

Sounds like a handy thing to have in the wiki - if you don't want to go to the trouble then send me the word doc, I'll PDF it and get it on the wiki.

Cheers,
Al

(pm'd you my email address anyway)

I dont. I copy and pasted it together, printed then closed Word without saving.
I can put it together again but your message said....

"Hey Thumbs Up
I offered to put your word guide onto the wiki as PDF - if you don't want to do it yourself I'll happily take it on. "

I wont get to it this week but let me know one way or the other as the the message you sent me implies you're are happy to. I'll get it together over the weekend if needed - just let me know.
