I've got the battery on charge tonight and will see if holds charge tomorrow (I haven't disconnected the battery, just put the charger on to the battery in situ - is this OK??

If the battery holds charge is it likely the alternator? what thoughts about reconditioned alternators?

Problem is, if the alternator is shorting out it will drag the battery down. So for your test to check if the battery holds it's charge, you really need to have it disconnected from the car.

I wouldn't bother with reconditioned alternators. Just get a new one from Advanced Factors (PM boringoldgit on here)

I just used a 32mm spanner but probably yes if you've not got access to one, it can be done without, but it damn tight on space I wouldn't try it Thumbs Up
