Light acceleration with slight turn of the wheel results in

Under very light acceleration and a slight turn of the wheel I'm hearing a juddering and crunching noise that reminds me of two (2) gears or cogs (teeth) not meshing properly. Noise and vibration can be quite jarring. I've had it into my dealer twice but they cannot replicate. It's getting worse. Any ideas?

It's intermittent and if you hold the line in the turn the noise continues, if you straighten or turn sharper it disappears. I wish there was a better way to explain it but reminds me of gears not lining up properly. I'm taking the D3 back in next week I'll ask about a recalibration. Thanks for the ideas Thumbs Up

Possibly a wheel bearing or cv joint

YOGI972 - Any idea if you can re-cal the transfer box with the IID tool?

I had a similar noise on my old jeep just before I went to sell it.
It turned out to be a universal joint on the drive shaft to one of the front wheels, a $50 fix, but it sounded like the front dif was tearing itself apart.
I could only replicate it at slow speeds and only intermittently, but check your joints first.

D3 has been with the dealer for 5 days and they can't' find the problem. I took a technician for a ride when I dropped it off and he acknowledged the noise and vibration/crunching. They have checked (supposedly) the wheel bearings, CV joints, and all other things that they could think of. I asked them to reflash the transfer box module and they're going to do that on Tuesday (supposedly).

If anyone else has any ideas I'm all ears.

I'd get them to change the transfer box oil at the same time.....not a lot of money, and if they're going to re-calibrate the transfer box ecu its a no-brainer Thumbs Up

Picking it up today they claim they reflashed the transfer box. Standard operating procedure as they tell me they can't replicate the issue and then I ask who has driven it and they tell me someone else than the tech that rode with me and knows the noise. Thud So perhaps 3rd time to the dealers is the lucky number - keeping fingers crossed that the reflash will cure. I did ask what the dealer charges for flatbed courier service when they told me they had someone else looking for the noise. They didn't think it was as funny as I did Thumbs Up

Hi Jjvd21, I have what sounds to be the same issue on my d3. So far machanic thought is was the propshaft as the centre bearing was f Censored d but this hasn't resolved the problem. It's back in tomorrow for diff oil change front and back also transfer box oil change and re-cal. Did you get your issue sorted and if so what was it. Bow down

Thanks in advance
Dave

Front and rear diff fluid change has eliminated the symptoms (knock on wood). I specifically asked my dealer to examine the diff fluid for metal shavings as I figured based on the noise / vibration I was feeling it would be shredded. They said they found nothing. I am amazed that new oil could eliminate the noise but is has. If it comes back again I would immediately change the diff fluids as the drain and full method probably only changes about 70% of the oil. Good luck!

Hi, we'll diff oil changed front and back oil was clean, transfer box oil changed and re cal done, front cv joints and bearings checked, no play and no wobbles. Car still the same Banging Head . So now what. Mechanic can't hear or feel the grinding but I still can and it's p Censored s me off. So think I'm going to have to let whatever is wrong go wrong or at least let it get worse. Also replaced prop shaft as centre bearing had failed. Now starting to make a dent in the bank account Big Cry
