Belgium 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Siberian SilverDiscovery 3

My D3 manual gear box consumes about 12.5 liter / 100 km, which is about 18MPG. I don't have a heavy foot, I drove my BMW 730d at 35mpg.

What's wrong? The car does have big off road tyres, but can these cause such a high consumption? I can get my 02 Range Rover TD6 at 23mpg easily...

Also, when my dealer connected my car to the computer he got a fault for the EGR valves, can these cause higher consumption???

I've a 54 plate SE auto and get approx. 31 MPG on a combined run. This is sitting at 60 mph on the motorway (unless I'm in a rush and then it drops below 30 MPG) and I tend to coast down hills with the vehicle in neutral (it's amazing how far you can coast and still keep good speed...)

So - is there any harm in coasting in neutral?

I'd not bother to be honest, I doubt it saves you much fuel.

Coasting in neutral down hill will probably make no real difference to fuel usage in a modern car.

IMHO a coasting vehicle is less controllable in a corner or if you need to take evasive action to avoid an accident so potentially dangerous although costing in a straight line down hill on a quiet stretch is not really a problem...

Technically coasting leaves you not in full control of the vehicle.

Also modern engines shut the fuel off on the override so less fuel is consumed, though not proven on the D3.

1200 miles with TinTent - 18 (and a bit) to the gallon. Generally keeping to a steady 55 mph as dictated in France Rolling Eyes

Just returned from towing Tin Tent from Newbury to near Disneyland Paris and back.
Admittedly it is a fairly light weight 6 berth twin axle, but got over 22.5mpg on the run from Folkstone down.
Bit less on the way back at around 21 but that was going a tad faster until hitting a monster jam on the M25. Maybe was going Whistle a bit faster down the M3 tho.

Overall 23.2mpg over the 1,000 miles (all with 2/ added). Pretty pleased with that as the gearbox T/C is getting knackered now.

don't know where this all went for you but note that 12.5l/km is approx. 22.6mpg (use the imperial not the US gallon). So far I average around 25-26mpg over 18000km with either commuting, or highway at 120-130km/h. But in the Pyrenees I averaged at one time 15.6mpg on a 250km off-raod trip, fully loaded, 5 passengers.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the economy of my Manual 2007 2.7 TDV6 so far...
My first run was mostly motorway plus fast A roads: 39mpg! I was driving the motorway at 70mph for part of the way and 60mph otherwise. Before I left the M25 at the start of my journey, which I drove at 70mph, the reading was showing almost 41mpg.
The second run 34mpg was 400 miles of mostly mostly motorway but a good deal of fast A-road. Faster driving as I had a ferry to catch! Still very respectable.
Both these runs have been unloaded (driver only) and aircon off. Better than my old 300tdi Smile

Fuel Consumption

I have recently been experimenting and I have noticed an increase in MPG. Although I have been doing a mixture of motorway and town driving, as of today I have got the MPG reading at 30.1 at the beginning of my journey it was reading 28 mpg. I drove to and from London and made a concerted effort to keep at a steady speed of 60 to 65, the air conditioning was on for most of the time and still the reading slowly crept up.

I have noticed the highest increases when using the new Shell Nitro+ Diesel, although this is more expensive it gives better performance and above all MPG.

I think if drive with a lead foot then the MPG will be less, and even so sometimes you need to, to get out of trouble. I have been happy with the fuel consumption on my car considering its weight and engine size. I am also driving on all weather Vredstein Wintrac Extreme's, which are brilliant when it rains let alone in snow and cold weather.

I would recommend trying the new Shell diesel, happy to hear other peoples experiences.

Really interesting to read of differing experiences here.

My '57 plate TDV6 auto with 79K returns 40MPG on long motorway journeys when I've really tried although it's exhausting to eek out this kind of economy! Still, that's very respectable in my eyes from a car that weighs so much and has the aerodynamics of a barn! Driving 'normally' in a hilly city, we're getting 23-25MPG when making short, mainly town journeys.

My own Auto has displayed 37mpg, and regularly in the mid-30's, if I keep my sensible head on Twisted Evil

It is always a couple of MPG over optimistic though...

I've never seen a TDV6 average a real 40 mpg over a tankful. That would be about a 700 mile range!
