Strangely my old 4.2 VX Landcruiser had twin batteries placed at either side at the front of the engine bay, snow would never settle where they were. Always got two square clear patches.
I seem to remember the bonnet strengthening was like a double skin across the whole panel except over the batteries. Can't imagine the batteries gave off heat all night and the same thing would happen even if the car wasn't used for a few days.

Oh and it's snowing here again!!!

Last year here in Sunny Swindon, we had an unforcast snow-storm, complete with deep purple sheet lightning in the snow clouds. Lasted about 30 minutes during which it put down about 3 inches of snow, and then carried on as a light blizzard to ensure continued bad visibility.

Carnage.

Most people were going slow and steady as there was virtually no traction, but all the exceptions were 4x4s.

In the traffic chaos it took me about 20 minutes to crawl along a road that normally takes two, during which the queue was overtaken by a Nissan Patrol doing about 45MPH (it's a 30 zone). He was followed Mexican wave syle by horns and shouts as people/cars were deluged in slush.
He vanished into the murk and I just hoped he didn't kill someone.

15 minutes later, there he was at a traffic island, with the rear wheel, wishbone and drive shaft sat a couple of metres away from his 3x3, having tried and failed to stop. He was shouting angrily on the mobile, no doubt fueled by the taunts and jeers of the cars filing past.

I'm a helpful fellow on the whole, so I wound down my window to assist.

"It'll take more than a tin of damp start to fix that you reckless Censored!" I shouted. Yep, that helped a lot; I felt Soooo much better Very Happy

Was that last year, or the year before ??

I remember leaving the office ( by the rail station ) with no snow, and by the time I got to Purton I was in inches of the stuff, and in my Omega rear wheel drive with huge tyres .. took me 3 hours to get the 60 miles home..

The Omega isn't a snow car be any means !!!

Embarassed I think you're right, it was the year before.

I know what you mean about cars not being of the right stuff for snow - my Volvo had it's traction control active and the ABS running for virtually the whole 2 hour trip/gridlock - that's 2 hours to do the 6 miles from West Swindon to East Swindon...I'd rather risk going via the motorway if that ever happens again.

Just back from business trip in D3 that took in Peterborough, Kings Lynn, Norwich, Lowestoft, Colchester, Chelmsford and LONDON!!!
No snow til woke up on Wed morning!! Blinkin eck, they're all over the place - cancelled flights, road accidents, trains cancelled, overhead road warnings, 2 x lane closures on north Circular [within 5 miles], appointments cancelled -because of "snow"!!
Bleedin Eck...give me a break...it was only a light dusting [gone by midday]!!
Wonder what would happen in LONDON if it really did snow!!! I shudder to think!!! Southern Softie Poofters!!
[no disrespect to london D3 owners of course]

Yeah, it was the year before. Luckily I was at home (nr. Wootton Bassett). A mate of mine was driving home from work - from West Swindon to Marlborough in his FWD Toyota Corrolla (yeah, I laughed too) and found that only the front wheel drive cars (and 4WD, obviously) could get up the hill south of Jnc. 15. This meant that there was a line of BMW 3 series all slip sliding about on the hill. Bet they wished they'd ordered Mondeos and saved the monthly co. car supplement Wink)

So next time there's snow, there's at least four of us in the area. We should set up shop in the Costa Coffee place in the Esso garage at the top of Plough Hill (the one azure111s mentions) and charge a tenner a time to tow people up! My ex father-in-law used to do that on the A38 near Saltash in his old Series II!

Hmmmm, may be the motorway isn't such a good option after all! I guess my old RWD Volvo may have struggled too; don't want to think about how that 2 tonne beauty sliding backwards down that hill would feel Shocked
