Wandering Steer Syndrome? |
|
Wife has been complaining that steering feels as if she is driving on ice. Until recently, she was. But problem's remained. I took it out this evening - I saw immediately what she meant. Steering feels "vague" and "light" with a disconcerting sense that the car may veer off to the side of its own accord.
Any ideas? Had car in Kwik Fit last week as we'd noticed front OS tyre balding. Had 2x new Pirelli Scorpions fitted and tracking done which was "well out" they said. Problem has arisen since then but is it connected?
Cheers

Did they put the car into "Tight Tolerance" before they aligned it ?
If not, it may now be a long way out & actually trying to track to the new settings & not straight at all.....
Maybe

Sounds like a tracking/4 wheel alignment issue.

erm......what might Tight Tolerence be, then? I assume the garage would know but I'd like to know as well!

oh i dunno. I love the car but it does seem so complicated!!!
Who would have thought that tracking would be a specialist area......and yet another way to spend money.
I'm going for a Series III next time - everything can be fixed with a hammer and you never hear any funny noises (as it's too noisy)

Shoud be 33 front, 36 rear. 37 at the front wouldn't make much difference, I run mine at 36 front.

Maybe Richard I suspect your alignment people do not know what tight tolerance mode means or that it matters. I believe that many LR dealers to not know what it means either or do not know how to dial it up with the T4.
Briefly, it sets the air suspension and vehicle to some tighter degree of level than is normal in day to day operation. This then makes the measurements and adjustments that the alignment people do actually matter. If left in normal mode, (just drive it up on the rack), the alignment is worthless.
Others may disagree - those most likely being alignment people without access to a T4 or similar. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L AJ-V8 petrol; Traxide Dual Battery; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads; OEM solid vented discs; LR4 design hitch receiver; Wiggs D4 MOST bluetooth module; Clock on the Dash; 3 Flash signal light mod; Backup Camera; 2015/16 Nav Data update.

It may also be that the car wasn't running during the adjustment - I'm not sure how long the air in the reciever lasts, but without ignition on it won't be self levelling anyway, tight tolerance (+/-3mm as apposed to +/- 10mm) won't help much. Mark.

Great advice as usual! How do I put the car in "tight tolerence" then? I'm in the garage, the car's up on the ramp. The engine is running. Mr Kwik Fit is playing with lasers and spanners.

You need to have a code writer......
Faultmate (I think)
MSV2
IID tool
T4
Etc etc
As I understand it, you can have it put int TT Mode & then drive it to the tyre shop ( at under 40Kph I remember)
Have the alignment done & just drive off. The car will leave TT mode at faster than 40 Kph
Some have been lucky & needed nothing but others have the sort of excitement that you are.
Let us know how you go.
