45-55mph Steering Issue - Input/Suggestions/Help Required. |
|
06 HSE, 19" Wheels shod with General Grabber AT's
Fault: Between 45-55mph, aggressive pull to left & excessive vibration through steering wheel, not present either side of the speeds mentioned.
Local LR Specialist baffled, following work done.
New pads & discs to front
New track rods & ball joints
New lower steering UJ
New Anti-roll bar shims
New suspension ball joints
Suspension checked
Wheels balanced.
Tracking checked
4 wheel alignment checked
Wheel bearings checked
Steering joints checked
Rear brakes stripped, cleaned & checked
All bushes checked
Tried with different wheels - fault still present
Beginning to get me down a little to be honest, it's a sod to drive & have kids to transport. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Dive shaft being checked tomorrow/Mon all being well.
Many thanks in advance.
Paul. Paul.

Mine does the same thing except it pulls to the right instead of the left. Dealer has replaced all the same things as yours. Mine vibrated before having my brakes replaced, then I had all 4 rotors and pads replaced. It was fine for maybe 3 days and the wobble was back exactly between 45-55 mph.
I'm dropping mine off at the dealer Wednesday, I'll let you know what they say.
Also let me know if you've found anything!
Thanks!

I have exactly the same issue between 50mp and 70mph. Annoying as hell. Have had front and rear pads and discs changed, brake calipers, different wheels, different tyres. No luck. Going to have another laser 4 wheel aligment this week. Strange thing is mine came from no where about 6 mths ago when i put my summer wheels back on. I presumed at first that one of the wheels back on had a weight that had fallen off. No such luck unfortunately
Any update would be appreciated

Mine just came out of the blue as well. Still in the garage, they were about to check top steering UJ yesterday.
Prop shaft checked out OK.
Did have the issue under breaking but change of pads & discs resolved that, however it is still there when driving.
Will update via here as soon as I hear anything, don't hold your breath though. Paul.

I had something similar with mine.
I also have GG AT2's and had trouble hanging on at around 55-65mph. The garage was baffled, but it turned out to be /flat spotting' on underinflated tyres when the car wasnt used for a couple of days.
The alloy wheels had started to bubble around the rim where balancing weights had been hammered on in the past, so were letting tiny amounts of air leak out dropping the pressure slightly, then with 3 tons of metal sitting on them in the cold weather it was enough to flat spot the tyres at the front - throwing the wheels out of balance. This sometimes sorted itself out when the tyres were run to warm them up, but in the end I had the wheels fully refurbiushed with a full grit blasting and re-powder coated.
Problem has now disappeared.

Cheers, car has been run on a brand new set of wheels & tyres & fault still there, my wheels & tyres tried on another vehicle & no issues so they've discounted that as an issue. Paul.

Have seen issues caused by very worn lower arm bushes. I would expect you would be hearing a pretty audible knock if that was the issue though. ..
Having re-read again, it does sound very driveshaft related, but that would not explain the steering pull My D3 Build Thread

Update.
Car collected on Sat after it being ripped apart, sadly the issue is still there, going back in towards end of Dec (1st available opp)?to have a donor driveshaft fitted to see if that cures the fault.
In the meantime everything else checks out fine, drive able but a sod at 45-55.
Will update when I next have news.
Many thanks to all involved on here, service at TVLR has been at usual standard. Paul.

Car went in for donor drive-shaft yesterday, fault still present so it's back to thinking caps on again.
Steering rack has been mooted but garage opinion is split 50/50 as to if it's the cause/issue.
Not sure if i mentioned the car was an auto.
Best wishes to one & all. Paul.

Brake caliper sticking just enough that something gets hot and binds at speed ? But if that was the case you would have noticed the excess heat from the disc I guess.

There's no brake feel at all when it happens, just lots of play in the steering wheel as it wobbles, brakes have also been ripped apart, cleaned & put back together using new bits (pads/sensors/discs at front).
Fault clears at 55/60 & it's as smooth as silk after that. Paul.

I would go for the steering rack and some new oil as well. But I would like to see the front corner air suspension height reading at the speed it occurs just to check that the air bag is ok.
