Off to France - Sat Nav?
I'm off to France in a couple of weeks and was wondering how my sat nav is going to perform. I've used it a lot over here and sometimes it does send you some peculiar ways that a more modern system would give a better route for.
I have a 2006 Disco with a 2008 sat Nav disk installed.
Any experiences most welcome.1964 Series IIA SWB Truck Cab - gone

Take a map
The french postcode system works on area's rather than specific addresses.
If you know where you are going and can find it on the map then i would put the destination in that way.
As for the routes that satnav chooses, they to can be a bit less than accurate, again,if you have a map and a half decent co-driver/SWMBO'd just get them to check the major junctions.
Good luck.

I agree, take a GOOD map. Having said that I have had no real problems in France or anywhere else in Europe except that the Sat Nav does not know I have a caravan on the back. Had a problem in Spain this March, went through a long(ish) tunnel came out the other side and Sat Nav suggested turn left at the roundabout. Not many roundabouts on Spanish Motorways!!

ive used the LR Sat nav in france and spain for the last 5 years and never taken a map - worked fine.
there are quite a few new roads built, especially in Spain, so need to use a bit of common sense but the LR wat nave worked very well IMO Duncan

Have done a few tours of France and Spain with the LR sat nav ...it's not as pretty colours as TomTom ...the Womans voice isn't as sexy as "Emma's" on TomTom .....but it works fine 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
Not forgetting that having speed cameras recorded on a Satnav in France is illegal and they will fine you/worse if they spot it - probably when they are checking for you high viz jacket that must be accessible from the drivers seat or the breathalyzers - though they are not a legal requirement for foreigners until November Mark.

And they claim to have roadside detectors to enable them to know if you are using speed camera detectors Instant fine if you can't pay and you will be arrested and your vehicle impounded until you do, I know someone who this happened to, arrested him while his wife raised the money for the fine, this was for speeding. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Same here..although only 3 years..never taken a map...never had a problem.
I agree that the post codes are no use , but that is due to them covering such a large area.. not an issue with sat nav.
It has found every address I have tried & has every POI I have needed (petrol, parking & supermarkets!)
yes it has its quirks & takes you on some interesting roads if you select shortest route, but has always got me there.
A map & the wife's map reading would be far worse in my case ! Cheers Ian

Most of the places I have been to in France know their GPS coordinates. I then use these in the sat-nav and have never had a problem.
Be aware though that there are 2 or 3 different formats for expressing GPS coordinates and the D3 only accepts Degrees/Minutes/Seconds. A lot of French places will give you coordinates in Degrees and decimal Minutes. These can easily be converted using a website such as http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html prior to leaving.
Hope this helps.

The French build a lot of new roads, so you will probably find there are missing roads on your 2008 disc.
The 2011 disk in my D3 is already out of date around Reims and Lyon, for example.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
Any issues with the site let me know!
When I had my Navman updated, they still didn't have the toll road around Brum on it and took another update a year later to get it to appear. The excuse was that they wanted to drive it to make sure it was in hte right place!Mark.
