Spare key won't turn the ignition

I have a strange one. When I bought my D3, there was only one key and the dealer ordered a brand new key for spare which was delivered about a month after I got my car.
With the spare key I went back to the garage and had it paired with my car. NOw recently i found out that the spare key will unlock the car (FOB and manual) but when it is put in the ignition lock it won't turn!

So no way I can get the car started with the spare key.

The spare key is cut exactly the same as my number one key, it is paired correctly to the vehicle, yet the ignition won't turn. I'm puzzled. The garage says it could be that the ignition lock is worn in a pattern that matches my number 1 key as the car has probably been driven all the time with that key (for the lst 6 years...).

I have my doubts.....

Your thoughts please. I really would like to have a spare key i can rely on....

Replacing all locks will cost me hugely, i.e. € 526,= materials + i don't know how may hours (all locks need to be replaced....)

thx for your help...

It has not been 'paired' correctly, the engine will not turn over (or start) if the imobiliser is activated

I had a similar problem, the replacement key was eased with a little filing and lubricant - by the Main Agent who supplied, serviced, etc.

Being able to physically turn the lock is a mechanical function not electronic, this would only not work if the key was not cut correctly (or it was a key from another vehicle)

I think the key must not be cut right, although it looks identical....

Try the new key in the door lock, you will have to remove the cap first, the ignition key and ignition barrel may have some wear, the new key and door lock will be as new, if this doesn't work the key has been incorrectly cut
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Thanks, I can open the door lock...

So that would point towards wear on the ignition key and the ignition barrel....grrrrr

They key will not turn in ignition unless the immobiliser recognises/lets it suggesting not paired correctly or totally flat battery.

On a D3/RRS, it will turn.

On an FFRR, with the electronic column lock, it won't turn if it is not paired, or battery flat Thumbs Up

Hi all im new here so please be gentle. Im going to resurrect this thread as ive got the exact same problem. I have literally owned my D3 for two days and have been checking everything works, but this has stumped me. The spare fob unlocks the doors but the key wont turn in the ignition barrel. Could this be as simple as the spare is a badly cut replacement (although to my untrained eye it looks identical) or is there some electronic security that wont allow the key to turn if its not coded to the car correctly? Or gone flat through lack of use. But as I said the fob part works ok. Any hints or clues would be gratefully received before I start fiddling with stuff I don't understand.. Very Happy

Will it work manually in the Left hand front door lock. If not it is probably incorrectly cut.

Remove the ignition barrel and give it a good blow through with compressed air. A small amount of crud can stop a new key from working whilst the routinely used key slowly adapts.

Be very careful with the passenger lock as they are made from dried noodles and are often neglected.

This does seem normal with these laser cut key blanks.

I cut myself a new key this week, after renewing one of my fob cases, & it took a few minutes smoothing the cut with some wet & dry.

Place the key into the ignition & gently jiggle with light pressure until it turns.
